Yangsheng Fang (Prescriptions for Nourishing Life) states that taking Yuquan (Jade Spring, i.e., saliva) every morning can strengthen the lower limbs, improve complexion, expel parasites, and solidify teeth. Yuquan refers to saliva in the mouth. Before rising in the morning, rinse the mouth with water and then swallow the saliva. Next, tap the teeth fourteen times. Repeat this process three times before stopping. This method is called "Lianjing" (Refining Essence). It is also said that swallowing saliva nine times before stopping can nourish deficiency consumptive disease (Xulao), making the person strong.
Regarding the condition of Xulao Jingji (Deficiency Consumptive Disease with Palpitations and Fright), it is caused by insufficiency of Heart Qi and the retention of fluid (Shuiyin) below the Heart. The Heart stores the Spirit (Shen) and governs the vessels and blood. If laborious strain damages the vessels and blood, leading to insufficiency of Heart Qi, evil pathogens may take advantage of this deficiency, causing mental fright, apprehension, and restless palpitations. If fluid retention occurs below the Heart, the pathogenic factor of fluid may assault the Heart, also resulting in palpitations.
