Cardioabdominal pain during pregnancy may arise from pre-existing cold-phlegm retention or recent exposure to wind-cold. These conditions are triggered by the deficiency of the Zang organs. Pathogenic factors and righteous Qi clash and converge in the Qi level, moving up and down with the flow of Qi. When rushing upward to the Heart, it causes heart pain; when attacking downward to the abdomen, it causes abdominal pain, resulting in cardioabdominal pain. During pregnancy, pain occurs due to the mutual attack of pathogenic and righteous Qi within the interior. If not resolved promptly, this pain impacts the Bao Mai (uterine collaterals), inevitably causing fetal movement, and in severe cases, leading to miscarriage or abortion. It is also said that cardioabdominal pain during pregnancy is mostly caused by wind-cold, damp-cold, phlegm-fluids clashing with Zang Qi, thus causing abdominal pain. If the attacking damage continues, it leads to fetal movement. Heart pain during pregnancy is mostly caused by wind-pathogens and phlegm-fluids invading the meridians of the Heart, where pathogenic Qi knots with righteous Qi, causing pain. If the pain results from injury to the regular meridian of the Heart, it is called "True Heart Pain" (Zhen Xin Tong). The Heart is the sovereign organ, commanding the body; if True Heart Pain occurs, the condition is often critical, with pain occurring at fixed times. If a pregnant woman suffers from persistent pain due to disease, it is because Qi invades the Bao Mai and damages the Zi Zang (uterus), leading to fetal movement. Whenever the fetus shifts position, there is usually a sense of unease; if this unease disturbs the Blood, vaginal bleeding may occur. (Lei Gong stated: For severe heart pain desiring death, urgently seek Yan Hu Suo.) Pregnancy involves weakness of the Zang and Fu organs; exposure to cold-dampness causes pathogenic Qi to clash with righteous Qi, resulting in abdominal pain. If the illness persists, it damages the Bao Mai, unsettling the fetal Qi. The treatment principle should be to dispel and scatter cold-dampness and harmonize and calm the fetal Qi, so that the pain will heal spontaneously.
