Lin syndrome (strangury) arises from Kidney deficiency and Heat in the Bladder. When the Kidney is deficient and fails to control water metabolism, frequent urination occurs. Heat in the Bladder causes difficult and obstructed urination, accompanied by frequency without relief.
In pregnant women, the uterus is connected to the Kidney. Deficient Heat within the Kidney region can induce Lin syndrome. In severe cases, it manifests as mental restlessness and oppression, hence termed "Zi Lin" (Pregnancy Strangury). The syndrome of "Zhuan Bao" (Displacement of the Urinary Bladder) is common among pregnant women. Its etiology lies in holding urine retention, a preference for fried and roasted foods, or heat forcing the fetus, causing Qi stagnation and reversal in the Small Intestine and concurrent stagnation in the Large Intestine. External fluids cannot enter the Bladder, and internal fluids cannot exit, resulting in dribbling urgency. Each attempt to urinate brings unbearable pain. There is also a sensation of tenesmus in defecation, resembling dysentery but not being so. One must press manually from the chest down to below the umbilicus to immediately expel urine; otherwise, urine may reflux upward and flow uncontrollably. Severe cases lead to abdominal distension and edema. The treatment method involves using cooling herbs to clear Heat in the Small Intestine while simultaneously purging the Large Intestine. Once abdominal cramping occurs and significant diarrhea ensues, the urinary bladder returns to its normal position, allowing urine to flow smoothly. It is advisable to take Kui Zi San (Malva Seed Powder).
Formulas
Di Fu Da Huang Tang (Kochia and Rhubarb Decoction) [Source: *Sheng Hui Fang*]. Treats pregnancy complicated by Zi Lin due to Kidney deficiency and Bladder Heat, causing difficult, frequent urination and mental restlessness.
Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Di Fu Zi (Kochia Fruit) (each 3 liang); Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Chi Shao Yao (Red Peony Root), Tong Cao (Tetrapanax Pith), Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (each 2 liang).
Process the herbs into coarse pieces. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with one sheng of water until reduced to 0.7 sheng, strain, and take warm. If not cured, drink juice from Di Fu Zi and Kui Gen (Malva Root). Avoid consuming Algae (Hai Zao).

An Rong San (Nourishing Harmony Powder) [Source: *Wei Shi Fang*]. Treats pregnancy with dribbling urination. What constitutes dribbling urination? The answer is: it originates from improper care, leading to Qi deficiency in the Zi Zang (Uterus), exacerbated by excessive alcohol and sexual activity damaging Blood and Qi. This causes obstruction in the Water Organ (Kidney/Bladder), resulting in dribbling, named Zi Lin. It is suitable to take An Rong San to promote diuresis.
Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber, heart removed), Tong Cao (Tetrapanax Pith), Hua Shi (Talcum) (each 1 qian); Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root, radix removed, soaked in wine), Deng Xin Cao (Juncus Medulla), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) (each 0.5 liang); Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Xi Xin (Asarum Root) (washed, each 1 qian).
Pulverize into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mix with Mai Men Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction) and take. Timing is flexible; this is particularly effective.
Alternative prescription: Use equal parts of Bing Lang (Areca Seed) and Chi Shao Yao (Red Peony Root). Decoct in water and take on an empty stomach; this has proven highly effective. Decocting with Cong Bai (Green Onion White) is also acceptable.

Use one sheng of Kui Zi (Malva Seed) and five sheng of water, boil to obtain two sheng, and divide into two doses. Another version excludes Kui Zi, using Kui Gen (Malva Root) instead. This also treats obstructed urination.
Gan Sui San (Kansui Powder) [Source: *Da Quan Liang Fang*]. Treats pregnancy complicated by Zi Lin where both large and small bowel movements are obstructed, accompanied by shortness of breath.
