[Chart of the Wu Chen Year's Climate and Qi]
Taiyang Cold Water governs the Heaven (upper half of the year), Taiyin Damp Earth governs the Earth (lower half of the year), and the middle reveals the Tai Zheng Fire Movement. The year's Fire is excessive, causing the climate transformation to operate ahead of the natural timing. Above, Taiyang (Cold Water) is seen.
Left Interstitial Qi:
The administrative commands are slow; cold descends upon the Great Void, and the cold regime rises greatly, while Yang Qi fails to exert its command. Marshes lack the solar flame (evaporation), so Fire erupts waiting for the proper time. Shaoyang (Ministerial Fire) governs in the middle, and seasonal rains cease. When rain stops at its extreme, it disperses at the intersection of Qi.
In this year, Water is the Heavenly Qi, and Earth is the Earthly Qi. Earth overcomes Water, causing the Heavenly Qi to be deficient. One should nourish the source of transformation in the ninth month before the year begins, to assist the transformation of Water and support what is overcome.
Before the midpoint of the year, Taiyang presides. Its transformation follows both the Root (Ben) and the Mark (Biao). The Root is Cold and the Mark is Yang; thus, Cold and Heat are balanced, and its Qi becomes harmonious. If Cold invades excessively, people suffer from dizziness and fainting. If the Fire movement is blazing, violent rain brings hail. People suffer from chest fullness, red eyes, yellow complexion, frequent belching, dry throat, and in severe cases, a dark complexion like soot, thirst, and fever. Treatment should assist with Sweet and Bitter flavors, and drain with Salty flavors.
After the midpoint of the year, the Fire movement dominates. Their Qi is compatible, and Dampness and Dryness act together, resulting in harmonious Qi. If Dampness invades internally, dust and haze obscure the rocks and valleys, turning them yellow. People suffer from... [text missing]. Blood leakage... [text missing]. Arm interior... Final Qi Period: Movement. Earth resides in the Water position, Earth Qi is correct, and Damp commands prevail. Yin condenses in the Great Void, dust and haze obscure the suburbs, and people feel miserable and cold. It is appropriate to treat the Guest of Taiyin, tonifying with Sweet, draining with Bitter, and relaxing with Sweet. Year grain should be... [text missing]. Intercalary grain should be... [text missing].
If there is an Excessive Qi (Sheng) before the midpoint of the year, there must be a Repaying Qi (Fu) after the midpoint. If Water is excessive, Taiyin must repay; if Earth is excessive, Jueyin must repay. Treatment for each should follow the laws of their Excess and Repayment.
