Sudden thirst (Bao Ke) occurs when intense heat causes the Cou Li (skin pores and interstices) to open, leading to profuse sweating and a deficiency of Jin Ye (body fluids). Consequently, sudden thirst with an urge to drink arises. If urination is unobstructed, it will not cause severe harm. However, if the San Jiao (Triple Burner) functions disharmoniously, with Heat stagnating in the Xin (Heart) and Fei (Lung), and dryness in the Wei (Stomach), accompanied by thirst but obstructed urination, one must guard against transformation into Yin Zheng (Fluid Retention Syndrome); this requires careful observation. A preference for thirst stems from Xin Re (Heart Heat). The Xin governs sweat; excessive sweating leads to Xu Zao (deficiency dryness) in the Shen (Kidney), thereby causing thirst. In summer, thirst accompanied by profuse sweating results in reduced urination; in winter, without sweating, urination is abundant. These are physiological signs of healthy individuals, hence such thirst is termed "Sudden Thirst" (Bao Ke).
