When Stomach Qi is full, internal heat is generated. Heat causes the Earth Qi within to become dry. The flow of Body Fluids (Jin Ye) becomes obstructed. This leads to a sensation of vexation and fullness in the pharynx and diaphragm. Consequently, thirst arises, prompting the desire to drink. The *Neijing* states that when Spleen Qi is hot, the Stomach becomes dry and thirsty. This is because the Zhen Qi (True Qi) of the organs is moistened by the Spleen, which governs the distribution of fluids for the Stomach. Once the Spleen is affected by heat, fluids fail to moisten the Stomach. Dryness in the Stomach results in incessant thirst.
Huanglian Tang (Coptis Decoction), from *Shenghui Fang*, treats heat in the Spleen and Stomach causing vexation and thirst, accompanied by gradual emaciation. It is suitable for this condition.
