或痛。此是肝心壅毒。在胸膈之间。更相击发。脏气上攻。致使然也。切宜兼洗出血。后饮
芦根饮子镇肝丸。
歌曰。忽然暴赤白睛红。轻者无妨甚者疼痛。还是肝心二脏热。更须击发使相攻。芦根

用升麻干葛汤三贴。每贴加蝉七个。作三服。如未退。用败毒散加大黄。又不退。却用
五膈宽中散。酒调坠下气。气顺自愈。
疗眼暴赤肿。碜痛不得开。泪出。

青梅膏 治暴赤眼涩痛。

铅丹膏 治暴赤眼疼痛。

慢火熬
至半碗。澄滤去滓。入白蜜半两。再重汤煮成膏。绵滤过。出火毒。入后药。

The so-called sudden red eye (Sudden Red Eye) is caused by heat accumulation in the Liver and Heart, spreading into the blood vessels. The heat qi rises upward, attacking the eyes, causing sudden redness, a sensation of foreign body or roughness (Yinse), and pain. If wind pathogen invades, itching and stuffiness occur.
Sometimes pain occurs; this is due to toxicity accumulating in the Liver and Heart between the chest and diaphragm, agitating each other, with organ qi attacking upward, thus causing this condition. It is essential to combine washing to remove blood, followed by drinking Lugen Yinzi (Reed Rhizome Decoction) and Zhen Gan Wan (Liver-Calming Pill).
The song says: Suddenly, the white of the eye turns red in sudden red eye; mild cases are harmless, severe ones cause pain. This is still heat in the Liver and Heart organs; further agitation is needed to make them attack each other. Lugen Yinzi must clear the superficial levels; do not let it recur later. Swallow half a dose of Zhen Gan Wan; such treatment has miraculous efficacy.
Formulas
Hao Huaizhi Tang (Good Locust Branch Decoction) treats red eyes with blurred vision and pain, tearing, and a feeling of oppression.
Locust Branch (Huaizhi) (cut into pieces, 2 liang), Qianpi (Cortex Fraxini), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) (remove stamens), Ruren (Semen Pruni Persicae) (remove skin), Mayaxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) (remove coarse bark), Shanzhizi (Fructus Gardeniae) (each 0.5 liang), Ancient Character Coins (14 pieces), Danzhuye (Light Bamboo Leaf) (one handful, finely cut), Yanshi (Sal). The above medicines are coarsely pounded and sieved. Use 5 qian per dose, add 2 zhan of water and the coins, decoct until 1.5 zhan remains, filter out the dregs, allow to cool to warm temperature, and wash the eyes. Re-warm if cooled.
Manjingzi Wan (Vitex Fruit Pill) (also known as Lingyangjiao Wan) treats Liver wind-heat, sudden redness of the eyes, roughness, swelling, and pain.
Xijiao Tang (Rhinoceros Horn Decoction) treats Liver and Heart heat stagnation attacking the eyes, causing sudden redness and swelling, roughness, and pain.
Xijiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis) (sliced), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) (remove black heart), Qumai (Herba Dianthi), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) (remove stamens, 3 fen), Zhizi Ren (Semen Gardeniae) (each 1 liang), Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae) (cut), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) (stir-fried), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) (remove seedlings), Qingxiangzi (Semen Celosiae) (each 1 liang). The above are coarsely pounded and sieved. Take 5 qian per dose, add 1.5 zhong of water, decoct until 7/10 remains, add Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf), filter out dregs, add Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 0.5 qian), take warm after meals, and again before sleep.
Shimi Jian (Stone Honey Decoction) (from *Shenghui Fang*) treats sudden red eye.
Shimi (Lapis Melleus) (3.5 liang), Zhusha (Cinnabaris), Yanshi (Sal) (each finely ground), Chuan Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Xixin (Radix Asari), Shijueming (Concha Arcae), Wzeiyu Gu (Os Sepiae) (mixed with honey to form a paste).
Zhen Gan Wan (Liver-Calming Pill) (from *Longmu Lun*) treats sudden red eye, and subsequent formation of corneal opacity (epicoryza/exophthalmia).
Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Shijueming (Concha Arcae) (each 1 liang), Gaoben (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong), Ganshayao (Radix Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae), Xixin (Radix Asari), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Fuling (Poria) ([dosage missing in original]).
Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder) (from *Shenghui Fang*) treats sudden red eye with swelling, roughness, and pain.
Xijiao Xie (Cornu Rhinocerotis), Ziqin (Radix Scutellariae), Qumai (Herba Dianthi), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) (each 3 fen, remove stamens), Zhizi Ren (Semen Gardeniae), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) (stir-fried), Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (each 1 liang). Pound and sieve into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1.5 zhong of water and 14 slices of Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf), decoct until 6/10 remains, filter out dregs, take after meals.
Jiawei Xiangsu San (Modified Fragrant Perilla Powder) (from *Deshengtang*) treats epidemic red eye, sudden redness and swelling, photophobia, unbearable pain.
Zisu (Folium Perillae), Xiangfuzi (Rhizoma Cyperi), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens), Sumu (Lignum Santali Rubrum), Chantui (Periostracum Cicadae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) (each 2 liang). Cut into small pieces. Take 5 qian per dose, add 1.5 zhong of water and 20 stems of Dengcao (Juncus effusus), decoct together until 8/10 remains, filter out dregs, take hot at any time.
Xianlingpi Wan (Epimedium Pill) (from *Shenghui Fang*) treats sudden red eyes, wind-heat rushing upward, painful red swelling with opacity.
Xianlingpi (Herba Epimedii), Gan Juhua (Flos Chrysanthemi), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Juemingzi (Semen Cassiae), Lingyangjiao Xie (Cornu Saigae Tataricae) (each 1 liang), Shetui Pi (Periostracum Serpentis) (1 fen, burned to ash). Pound into powder, mix with refined honey, pound 200-300 times, make pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 20 pills with warm water after meals.
Xi Gan Chaihu San (Liver-Washing Bupleurum Powder) (from *Shenghui Fang*) treats sudden red eyes.
Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) (2.5 liang, remove seedlings), Chuan Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Lingyangjiao Xie (Cornu Saigae Tataricae), Chuan Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Digupi (Cortex Lycii Radicis) (each 1 liang), Juemingzi (Semen Cassiae), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 2 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (0.5 liang, stir-fried until slightly red). Make into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1 zhong of water, decoct until 7/10 remains, filter out dregs, take warm before meals.
Most suitable for treating sudden red eyes.
Ruren Gao (Prunus Paste) treats sudden red eyes, heat-toxin swelling and pain, membrane covering the pupil.
Ruren (Semen Pruni Persicae) (remove skin), Qiandan (Minium), Jingyan (Well Salt) (1 fen), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) (remove stamens, 1 liang), Shidan (Calcar Cupreum) (0.5 qian), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum), Shexiang (Moschus) (each 0.5 qian), Mi (Melle) (5 liang). Excluding Longnao, Shexiang, and Mi, first pound Ruren etc. finely like powder. Add 1 sheng of water and 5 liang of Mi, decoct together until consistency is appropriate. Filter through new cotton, add Longnao and Shexiang powder, mix evenly. Store in porcelain vessel. Dip copper chopsticks in a small amount to apply to the eye.
Huanjing San (Restore Vision Powder) (from *Yuyao Yuan*) treats wind-red sudden red eye, floating corneal opacity, congenital redness, ulceration, roughness, itching, swelling, and pain.
Zhizi Ren (Semen Gardeniae), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) (each 1 liang), Xixin (Radix Asari) (remove seedlings), Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae) (stir-fried, each 2 liang), Qianpi (Cortex Fraxini) (4 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (stir-fried, 0.5 liang) [usage missing].
Longdancao San (Gentian Root Powder) (from *Heji Fang*) treats sudden red, swollen, and painful eyes, wind-heat rushing upward, pain extending to orbits and eyelids, red ulceration, pterygium invading the cornea, frequent hot tears, possibly due to anger damaging Liver qi, or long-term strain on vision, wind/sand/dust entering the eye, causing internal/external opacities and all eye diseases.
