When women experience abdominal pain during menstruation, it is caused by fatigue damaging the Qi and Blood, leading to physical weakness. Cold and Wind pathogens invade the Bao Luo (uterine collaterals), damaging the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel). This involves the Hand Taiyang (Small Intestine) and Hand Shaoyin (Heart) meridians. The Chong Mai and Ren Mai both originate from within the Bao Gu (uterus) and are known as the Sea of Meridians. The Hand Taiyang meridian belongs to the Small Intestine, and the Hand Shaoyin meridian belongs to the Heart. These two meridians are exteriorly-interiorly related and govern menstruation in the lower body. If the blood in these meridians is deficient, it becomes susceptible to invasion by Wind and Cold. At the time when menstruation is about to begin, the movement of Qi and Blood interacts with Wind and Cold. *Baoshi Lun* states that postpartum occurrence of this disease is also due to this reason. Treatment should primarily use Qixuan San (Seven Mysteries Powder) or Hupo San (Amber Powder).
*Shengji Zonglu* discusses: Menstruation is the surplus of menstrual blood. When regulated properly, menstruation arrives on schedule without being too early or too late. If the Qi of the Chong and Ren vessels is deficient and attacked by Wind and Cold, causing Qi and pulse flow to be unsmooth, menstruation becomes irregular. It may arrive early or late, in large or small amounts. The Cold and Wind pathogen clashes with menstruation, causing stiffness and rigidity of the waist and back, and stabbing pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions when menstruation arrives.
When women experience abdominal pain during menstruation, it is because Tian Gui (substances promoting reproductive development) has just arrived, Ying Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) are disharmonious, and the Heart Spirit is unsettled. Occasionally, Cold pathogens invade. The Blood and Qi do not flow smoothly, causing menstrual blood to stagnate and churn in the abdomen and around the navel, resulting in stabbing pain. The treatment method should be to smooth the flow of Qi and Blood, preventing stagnation, so that the pain heals itself.
