[Movement Therapy] Upon waking in the early morning, use both hands to alternately pull the two ears from the top of the head. Then draw the hair at the temples; this promotes circulation, preventing white hair and deafness. Next, rub palms until hot and massage the face, moving from top to bottom for fourteen repetitions (two sets of seven). This treats *Hong Kong Foot* (a term historically referring to various lower limb ailments, often edema or gout) and gives luster to the face. Rub hands until hot again and massage the body up and down; this is called "Dry Bathing" (*Gan Yu*). It enables one to resist wind-cold, curing febrile diseases caused by seasonal pathogens manifesting as chills, fever, headache, and hundred diseases.
(Attached Discussion)
When a seasonal pathogenic disease reaches the second day, the Yangming channel is affected. The Yangming channel governs the muscles, its collaterals connect to the nose, and enter the eyes. Therefore, on the second day of illness, there is internal heat, dry nose, and insomnia. Since all Yang channels are on the exterior, and the exterior is just beginning to be affected, healing can be achieved by applying ointments, moxibustion, and inducing sweating.
Formulas:
Shuijie San (Water-Resolving Powder) [From *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats seasonal pathogenic disease on the second day, presenting with headache, high fever, and mental restlessness/dryness.
Ingredients: Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (2 liang, remove root and nodes), Rheum Radix et Rhizoma (Chuan Dahuang, 川大黄) (1 liang, cut into pieces and slightly stir-fried), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) (1 liang), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 桂心) (1 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (1 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and cut), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishaoyao, 赤芍药) (1 liang). Grind all ingredients into powder. Take 2 qian mixed with warm water at any time. Repeat after some time. Before taking the medicine, take a hot shower, then immediately take the medicine, cover with blankets to induce sweating. For severe cases, no more than three doses are needed. For robust individuals, take two fangcun chi. This formula is suitable for those with excess wind patterns and is appropriate during the dog days of summer. If Rheum Radix et Rhizoma is removed, it can be used in spring and summer.
Another Formula [From *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats seasonal pathogenic disease on the second day with high fever and headache.
Ingredients: Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (1 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and cut), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) (3 fen), Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou, 栝蒌) (one large fruit, take pulp, remove seeds, place in bowl). First, decoct Ginger and Licorice Root in one large cup of unadulterated wine until reduced to six parts. Strain. Pour the hot liquid into the bowl containing the Trichosanthis pulp, squeeze out the juice. Take divided into two warm doses at any time.
Chaihu San (Bupleurum Powder) [From *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats seasonal pathogenic disease on the second day, with high fever, aversion to cold, headache, and stiffness/heaviness in the waist and spine.
Ingredients: Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡) (1 liang, remove seedlings), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (1 liang, remove root and nodes), Puerariae Radix (Gegen, 葛根) (3 fen, cut), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 桂心) (2 fen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (1 fen, honey-fried until slightly red and cut). Grind into powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 50 grains of Sojae Semen Praeparatum (Douchi, 豆豉) and 14 leaves of Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe, 薄荷) to one medium cup of water. Decoct until reduced to six parts. Strain. At any time, eat a little porridge first, then take a hot shower, then take this medicine. Cover with blankets to induce sweating.
Zhizi San (Gardenia Powder) [From *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats seasonal pathogenic disease on the second day, with headache, back stiffness, body heat, and aversion to cold.
Ingredients: Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi Ren, 栀子仁) (1 liang), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) (1 liang), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) (2 liang), Puerariae Radix (Gegen, 葛根) (1 liang, cut), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) (soaked in water, peel skin and tips, remove double kernels, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow, use 1 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and cut). Grind into powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add two stalks of Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai, 葱白) and 50 grains of Sojae Semen Praeparatum (Douchi, 豆豉) to one large cup of water. Decoct until reduced to five parts. Strain. Take hot at any time. Cover with blankets to induce sweating.
Gegen San (Kudzu Powder) [From *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats seasonal pathogenic disease on the second day, with headache, back stiffness, mental restlessness, and high fever.
Ingredients: Puerariae Radix (Gegen, 葛根) (cut), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (remove root and nodes), Cornu Rhinocerotis (Xijiao Xie, 犀角屑) (each 1 liang). Grind into powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add half a fen of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) and three Jujubae Fructus (Zao, 枣) to one large cup of water. Decoct until reduced to five parts. Strain. Take hot at any time. Cover with blankets to induce sweating.
Sanwu Tang (Three-Ingredient Decoction): Treats epidemic disease after one or two days, feeling high body heat, headache, soreness and pain in bones and flesh, back stiffness, dry mouth and nose, slightly cold hands and feet, and yellow-red urine. These are the signs. If so, first decoct Taoliuge Tang (Peach-Willow-Kudzu Decoction) for bathing.
Ingredients: Ramulus Persicae (Taozhi, 桃枝) (finely cut, 5 dou), Folium Salicis (Liuye, 柳叶) (finely cut, 5 dou), Acetum Fermentatum (Zhuojiangshui, 酢酱水) (1 dou). First, boil Peach branches and Willow leaves in one shi of water until seven dou of liquid remains. Strain. Add the vinegar sauce water. When it feels stagnant and hot, use it for bathing. After bathing, wipe the body dry, apply powder and massage. Avoid wind. Then, prick the sides behind the head/eyes and under the tongue to release blood in a secluded place. Apply salt powder to the pricked areas. Then lie in bed.
Subsequently, drink Jiemi Gan Ge Wuwu Yin (Muscle-Releasing Kudzu Five-Ingredient Drink) to mildly induce sweating. If the pathogen is light, it may resolve here.
Ingredients: Puerariae Radix (Gegen, 葛根) (cut, 5 he), Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai, 葱白) (cut, 1 sheng), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) (cut, 2 he), Sojae Semen Praeparatum Core (Chixin, 豉心) (1 sheng, wrapped in silk), Oryza Glutinosa (Jingmi, 粳米) (2 he, ground). Cut ingredients. Boil the first four ingredients in five sheng of water until three and a half sheng remain. Strain. Add ground glutinous rice. Cook until rice is soft. Drink while hot in one go. Cover mildly to induce sweating. No taboos.
If the condition does not resolve with the previous bathing methods, prepare Jizi Tang (Egg Decoction) for heavy purging.
Break five fresh eggs at the top, pour into a cup. Add the water from one additional egg. Stir vigorously with chopsticks until very turbid. Boil one sheng of water until boiling. Pour the eggs into the boiling water, stir slightly. When just cooked, pour into a bowl. Add a little soy sauce clear liquid. When it smells slightly fishy, drink hot until finished. Cover to induce sweating.
If sweating from the Egg Decoction resolves the condition but it does not recede, use Zhizi Liuwei San (Gardenia Six-Ingredient Powder) to purge.
Ingredients: Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, 栀子) (30 pods, split), Puerariae Radix (Gan Ge, 干葛) (5 liang), Artemisiae Scopariae Herba (Yinchen, 茵陈) (2 liang), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shushengma, 蜀升麻) (3 liang), Rheum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄) (5 liang), Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao, 芒硝) (5 liang). Cut and grind into powder. Take three fangcun bi mixed with drink. One should feel intestinal movement shortly after, indicating purgation. If no bowel movement after one meal period, give hot drink first. If still no effect, take another fangcun bi with drink. Stop when purged. Adjust temperature and rest afterwards; no need to continue this medicine.
If purging with Zhizi Liuwei San fails to resolve symptoms, and vomiting, inability to eat, and dryness of mouth, nose, throat, and tongue appear, prepare Sheng Lugen Bawei Yinzi (Fresh Reed Rhizome Eight-Ingredient Drink).
Ingredients: Radix Phragmitis Communis (Sheng Lugen, 生芦根) (cut, 1 sheng), Radix Ophiopogonis (Sheng Maidong, 生麦门冬) (2 sheng, remove heart), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜) (5 liang), Radix Ginseng (Renshen, 人参) (2 liang), Radix Anemarrhenae (Zhimu, 知母) (2 liang), Fructus Pruni Mume (Wumei, 乌梅) (10 pieces), Mel (Baimi, 白蜜) (1 he), Bambusae Succus (Zhuli, 竹沥) (3 he). Cut ingredients. Decoct in eight sheng of water until three sheng remain. Strain. Mix in honey and bamboo sap. Drink slowly, unlimited frequency, temperature, or timing relative to meals. Although this drink cannot instantly cure febrile disease, it prevents worsening of symptoms, stabilizes vitality, warms the heart, and restores desire. Follow previous instructions. If fever persists, chest/abdominal fullness increases, food intake decreases, and epigastric stagnation occurs, do not take heavy doses.
If drinking the Sheng Lugen Bawei Yinzi fails to resolve symptoms, appetite declines further, abdominal pain becomes unbearable upon touch, and despite being a heat disease with expected hot body, bone/flesh pain, surging-rapid pulse, dry mouth, and vomiting, the body becomes cool, pulse becomes deep-thin, food passes down without pain sensation, constipation occurs, epigastrium feels like stone, lips are tight, nostrils flare, eyes/hands move restlessly, and delirium appears. This is extreme heat leading to craving for cold foods/drinks. Heat is knotted in the heart with no outlet. In such cases, less than 2 out of 10 survive. Do not use standard methods. Consider this a critical situation requiring Banxia Shiwei Tang (Pinellia Ten-Ingredient Decoction). If jaundice appears with yellow eyes (like yellow cypress), it is Ji Huang (Acute Jaundice); also requires this rescue decoction.
Ingredients: Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia, 半夏) (5 liang, from Xiongzhou, washed with hot water until slippery juice is gone), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜) (3 liang), Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸) (2 liang), Rheum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄) (5 liang), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 桂心) (2 liang), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) (3 liang), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 细辛) (3 liang), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡) (3 liang), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi, 牡丹皮) (3 liang), Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao, 芒硝) (2 liang). Cut ingredients. Decoct in one dou of water until three sheng remain. Strain. Dissolve Mangxiao. Divide into three warm doses. Wait until a person walks ten li before next dose. If purged after one dose, rest and adjust; do not take more medicine. Drink millet juice slowly. If purging is excessive, eat sour rice or thick sour sauce porridge to stop it. Taboos: mutton, malt sugar, raw green onion, raw vegetables, peach, plum, sparrow meat, coriander.
If after taking Banxia Shiwei Tang, toxic heat subsides but purging continues excessively and vitality weakens, use Renshen Wuwei San (Ginseng Five-Ingredient Powder).
Ingredients: Radix Ginseng (Renshen, 人参) (5 liang), Cornu Rhinocerotis (Sheng Xijiao, 生犀角) (2 liang, powdered), Fructus Pruni Mume (Wumei Rou, 乌梅肉) (3 liang, roasted), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang Xie, 生姜屑) (3 liang), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) (2 liang, remove hairs; if unavailable, substitute with 4 liang Longgu, 龙骨). Grind into powder. Take one fangcun bi with drink, three times daily. Gradually increase to two bi. Taboos: pork, cold water.
Shuijie San (Water-Resolving Powder): Treats epidemic headache and high fever on days 1-2.
Ingredients: Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 桂心) (2 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (2 liang), Rheum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄) (2 liang), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (4 liang). Grind into powder. After patient bathes in hot/cold alternating water, take one fangcun bi with warm water, three times daily. Cover to sweat. Or recover via bowel movement. Robust individuals take two cun chi. *Yannian Milu* adds Scutellariae Radix and Paeoniae Radix (2 liang each). *Gujin Luyan* omits Licorice, adds Paeoniae Radix. Treats epidemic heat disease, painful sores, muscle-releasing sweating.
Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction): Treats epidemic pestilence on days 1-2, headache and high fever.
Ingredients: Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡) (1 liang, remove seedlings), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao, 芍药) (1 liang), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi Ren, 栀子仁) (5 qian), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) (5 qian, remove black heart), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) (crushed), Puerariae Radix (Gegen, 葛根) (cut, each 1 liang). Grind into powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add one and a half cups of water, three inches of Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai, 葱白), and 30 grains of Sojae Semen Praeparatum (Douchi, 豆豉). Decoct until seven parts remain. Strain. Take warm at any time.
Mahuang Jiemi Tang (Ephedra Muscle-Releasing Decoction): Treats epidemic pestilence on days 1-2, headache, high fever, restlessness.
Ingredients: Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (remove root/nodes, 1 liang), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻) (1 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (honey-fried, cut, 1 liang), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao, 芍药) (1 liang), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) (1 liang, crushed), Dentalia (Beichi, 贝齿) (1 fen, calcined), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) (peel skin/tips, double kernel, stir-fried, ground, 0.5 liang). Grind into powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add one and a half cups of water. Decoct until one cup remains. Strain. Take warm at any time. Cover to sweat and recover. Eat bean porridge afterwards to tonify deficiency.
Formula for Cold Damage, Seasonal Pathogen, or Epidemic with headache, high fever, surging pulse, on days 1-2:
Use Cinnabar (Dansha, 丹砂) 1 liang. Grind to powder. Decoct in one dou of water until one sheng remains. Take in one dose. Cover to sweat.
For seasonal pathogen with irregular cold/heat attacks, caused by cold-heat conflict, resembling malaria. If untreated long-term, it damages life. Even with herbal medicine, recovery is difficult. Use Hot-Cold Alternating Bath.
Fill vessel with water using fire device. Sit in middle, do not move. Soon joints open, cold/heat qi exits pores as sweat. If chest feels hot/stuffy, take small amount of hot tea to settle. Stay out of bath for a while, cover with blankets and sleep. Recover suddenly. For severe cases, 2-3 baths suffice.
Treat epidemic on days 1-2:
Use Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) 1 da liang, remove nodes. Decoct in four sheng of water, skim foam, take two sheng. Strain. Add one spoon of rice and beans to make thin porridge, yield one sheng. First take hot-cold alternating bath, pouring over head over 100 bowls. Then take the porridge. Cover to sweat after taking. Best at night.
Bashen Tang (Eight-God Decoction): Treats seasonal pathogen on days 1-2, headache, high fever, mental restlessness.
Ingredients: Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) (5 qian, cut and baked), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (5 qian), Rheum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄) (5 qian, cut and stir-fried), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) (5 qian), Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhizi Ren, 山栀子仁) (5 qian), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (remove root/nodes, boil, skim foam, bake, 1 liang), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao, 芍药) (1 fen), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjiesui, 荆芥穗) (1 fen). Coarsely grind and sieve. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one large cup of water, three leaves of Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe, 薄荷), one inch of Allii Fistulosi Bulbus (Congbai, 葱白), two slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜). Decoct until six parts remain. Strain. Take hot.
Zhizi Tang (Gardenia Decoction): Treats epidemic on days 1-2, headache, high fever, internal heat.
