When the Liver Meridian is deficient, wind pathogens take advantage of this weakness to invade, resulting in itchy eyes. When Heart heat is excessive and blood flow surges and overflows, redness of the eyes occurs. These two conditions have their respective root causes. Currently, the eyes are both red and itchy, and the eyelids are tight and contracted. This is because wind-heat attacks internally while cold qi invades externally, leading to such symptoms. There are also cases where itching precedes pain; this is generally due to... The *Longmu Lun* (Treatise on Dragon Wood) states: "Extreme eye itching that is unbearable belongs to external obstruction." When this disease first appears, sudden, intermittent itching occurs that is extremely difficult to endure. This ailment is often caused by exogenous wind pathogens affecting the Liver. Dan Tang (Gallbladder Decoction), Bogan Wan (Liver-Nourishing Pill), and Huanjing San (Vision-Restoring Powder) can be used to stop the itching.
The verse says: "Intermittent eye itching is extremely hard to bear; who can find the root cause of this disease? The pupil connects to the Clear and Pure Mansion, suffering invasion from rising wind-heat. One should use Yangbai..." (Note: The original text here seems fragmented or contains a layout error, listing only "Yangbai" before citing Wei Shi's De Xiao Fang, implying a reference to the acupoint or related treatment).
Wei Shi's *De Xiao Fang* (Effective Formulas from Master Wei) states: "Extreme eye itching, with the pupil and eyebrow joint itching together, cannot be cured. This is because the Clear and Pure Mansion was first affected by wind-heat. It is appropriate to administer Qufeng Yizi San (Wind-Expelling One-Character Powder)."
