Ptosis and laxity of the eyelids are caused by deficiency of blood and qi, leading to open skin pores (couli). Wind-pathogens invade the skin of the eyelids, causing the skin to become lax and droop, covering the eyeball. Hence, it is commonly referred to as "Sui" (a term for ptosis or similar condition).
Formulas:
Huangqi Wan (Cinnamon Twig Pill? No, Huangqi is Astragalus. *Correction*: Huangqi Wan - Astragalus Pill) (From *Shengji Zonglu*)
Treats eyelids drooping over the eyeball, lax and difficult to open; also brightens the eyes.
Ingredients: Huangqi (Astragali Radix, sliced), Jili Zi (Tribuli Fructus, stir-fried and thorns removed), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, head removed), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, sprouts removed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Shenggan Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, baked), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen, flesh removed), Shanyu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Qin [Name missing in source text, likely Qinjiao or Qupi]. Grind into fine powder. Refine honey to make pills.
Lingyangjiao San (Antelope Horn Powder) (From *Taiping Shenghui Fang*)
Treats ptosis with swelling of the eyelids, restlessness in the heart, and headache.
Ingredients: Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu, shaved), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, whiskers removed), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Chishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, forked parts removed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, black heart removed, each 3 fen).
Dosage: Take 3 qian 7 fen per dose.
Dahuang San (Rhubarb Powder) (From *Taiping Shenghui Fang*)
Treats ptosis with swelling and pain of the eyelids.
Ingredients: Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, sliced and ground, slightly stir-fried), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen, flesh removed), Jingquanshi (Jingquanshi), Qi Sangye (Mori Folium, autumn leaves), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried until slightly red), Juemingzi (Cassiae Semen, each 3 fen).
Preparation: Grind into a powder. Dosage: Take 3 qian per dose. Decoct with one zhongzhan of water until reduced to six-tenths. Strain and take warm after meals.
Qinpi Tang (Phellodendri Cortex Decoction? No, Qinpi is Bark of Phellodendron or Fraxinus. Here likely Fraxini Cortex or Phellodendri Cortex. Given context of heat/swelling, often Phellodendri or Fraxini. Standard WHO term for Qinpi is Cortex Fraxini or Cortex Phellodendri. In *Shenghui Fang*, Qinpi Tang usually uses Cortex Fraxini. I will use Cortex Fraxini/Phellodendri based on common usage, but strictly "Qinpi") (From *Taiping Shenghui Fang*)
Treats swelling and pain of the eyelids.
Ingredients: Qinpi (Cortex Fraxini or Cortex Phellodendri, remove coarse bark and slice), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, whiskers removed, each 1 liang), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen, flesh removed, 1 fen), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, sliced and stir-fried), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried and sliced), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, [text incomplete]), Zhuye (Bambusae Folium, [text incomplete]).
