Whenever food and drink enter the stomach, the Spleen transforms and transports them. If there are accumulations in the abdomen, or if nursing care is improper and eating habits are irregular, the Spleen and Stomach become weaker, leading to delayed digestion of food.
Thus, retained food (retained food) is produced. Sometimes it obstructs the chest and diaphragm, requiring regulation. There are ten commonly used formulas for such conditions. Decoct with long-flowing water, take 5-6 qian of the liquid. Do not consume Jiuzheng Wan (Alcohol Accumulation Pill) or Jinshi Wan (Appetite-Stimulating Pill), as these contain Ban Dou (Croton Seed), which is highly toxic. For all kinds of sedimentary diseases, or when fluid retention prevents eating, causing dizziness and inability to clear and descend qi, use Chatiao San (Tea-Regulating Powder) to induce vomiting. Subsequently, take Qixuan Wan (Seven-Air Pill) or Muxiang Binglang Wan (Costus and Areca Nut Pill). Those who live comfortably, with idle lifestyles and excessive nourishment, may suffer from alcohol and food injury, leading to retained fluid in Zhongwan (CV12), distension, fullness, and blockage; they must treat this with Muxiang Daoyin Wan (Costus Guiding-Drink Pill). For field laborers who eat coarse food, wear thin clothes, and engage in physical exertion, if injured by alcohol and food, resulting in heart and abdominal fullness and oppression, or when vinegar and wine interact toxically, severe cases may experience diarrhea three to five times daily. The pathogen of "cooked food" enters through the mouth and constitutes retained food. The five flavors entering the mouth nourish the Five Viscera; obtaining them ensures life, lacking them leads to death, and harming them becomes a detriment. Therefore, retained food is the precursor to miscellaneous diseases. If the Five Viscera are imbalanced, food cannot be transported and transformed, leading to blood stasis and qi stagnation, with various symptoms arising like swarms of bees, all caused by retained food. Treatment should be based on the deficiency or excess of the viscera and the depth of the disease. Health preservation texts warn against using Ban Dou (Croton Seed); instead, patients should take Qingmuxiang Wan (Green Costus Pill). If there is a food fixation, only Ban Dou can overcome it. This is referred to as "disturbing what can be disturbed; disturbing also means no disturbance" (meaning stubborn accumulations require strong purgatives, but分寸 must be observed).
