For all cases of Lung Consumption (Fei Lao), one should tonify Kidney Qi to benefit it. When Kidney Qi is robust, it can nourish the Lungs. If a person goes against the Qi of Autumn, the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian will fail to收 (gather/contract), leading to Lung Qi becoming scorched and distended. Following this pattern leads to life; opposing it leads to death. Following it leads to cure; opposing it leads to chaos. Treating compliance as opposition is called "Guan Ge" (Closure and Obstruction); once disease occurs, pathology arises.
Lung Consumption may be caused by physical cold exposure, drinking cold liquids, or pathogenic factors from Autumn. Symptoms include shortness of breath and facial edema, loss of smell, chest stagnation and obstruction, weak Qi and hoarse voice, coughing with wheezing sounds, expectoration of thick sticky phlegm, or expectoration of pus and blood, or dry and painful throat unable to expectorate, upper body asthma and fullness, gradually progressing to emaciation and debility, alternating chills and fever, and reduced food intake and consumption. These are all symptoms of Lung Consumption.
Formulas:
