The Qi of all fu and zang organs is derived from the Lung. The Lung governs Qi. Qi belongs to Yang. When Yang Qi is peaceful and harmonious, the voice is clear and unobstructed. If the body is exposed to cold or one consumes cold drinks and food, the two types of cold pathogenic factors interact and injure the Lung. Therefore, wind-cold is a Yin pathogen. When Yin pathogens contend with Yang, Yin and Yang become disharmonious, and the Qi mechanism becomes obstructed. This results in hoarseness or loss of voice.
