Jiu (Alcohol/Wine) is the liquid of fermented grains. Its nature is fierce, rapid, and swift. It enters the body after food but exits before food. It can unblock the joints and travel through the skin and interstices (Cou Li). In ancient times, decoctions were made... [Text fragment: For wine drinkers, jaundice caused by alcohol, etc., one can use Ji Su (Elsholtzia), Ke (Shell), and Bai Shao Yao (White Peony Root) to resolve it; use Chai Hu (Bupleurum) and Huang Qin (Scutellaria) to reduce fever; use Zhi Qiao (Aurantium) to broaden the middle; use Shao Yao (Peony) to harmonize Ying (Nutritive Qi) and stop sweating. Thus, one recovers suddenly. However, for those who suffer from illness due to long-term drinking, can one rashly use warm tonifying herbs? This is worth attempting to understand the principle.]
Whenever one drinks too much, the toxicity of alcohol soaks into the intestines and stomach, overflows into the meridians, causing the blood vessels to be full, leading to restlessness, confusion, and vomiting. Drunkenness with severe vomiting causes the alcohol and phlegm to struggle against each other without dissipating, thus causing abdominal fullness and indigestion. The nature of alcohol is toxic and extremely hot. Drinking too much allows the toxic heat qi to seep into the meridians and soak the zang-fu organs, generating various diseases. Some present as irritability, high fever resembling Taiyang disease (Exterior syndrome); some as shivering aversion to cold, similar to Warm Malaria; some as vomiting, diarrhea, and discomfort, or retching, irritability, and oppression. These illnesses arise according to the deficiency or excess of the organ qi. Since the symptoms are not singular, they are called "various diseases."
