Coughing diseases have several types. There is heat cough, cold cough, lung qi cough, and fluid-retention cough.
Heat cough: Often seen in young people with strong constitutions and abundant physical energy. If they suffer from cold due to improper diet or sleep habits, it becomes a cold cough. This can be resolved by regulating life with warm methods and taking warm herbs.
Lung qi cough: Affects people of all ages. Patients often have latent upper-jiao heat, which is aggravated by dietary indiscretion involving heat-producing foods, leading to persistent coughing. Over years, lung qi declines, resulting in qi cough. If not treated early, this may develop into lung abscess (Fei Yong). Once it reaches this stage, it is mostly incurable.
Fluid-retention cough: Caused by ingested fluids stagnating in the chest, where water qi rushes upward into the lungs, triggering cough. If left untreated for a long time, it gradually develops into water-qi disease. Such conditions are also difficult to treat.
Symptoms of heat cough: There are no other specific manifestations; it simply flares up upon exposure to heat pathogens. For this, one should take Shengdi Huang Tang (Rehmannia Root Decoction) consisting of seven flavors including Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix).
