In the human abdomen, there are "Shi" (Corpse) worms. These creatures are born with humans and pose a great harm to people. The shape of the Shi worm resembles a large horse's tail or thin tendons. Located between the intestines, if numerous, they cause hemorrhoids; in severe cases, they lead to leprosy-like diseases. Due to human sores and wounds, various abscesses, ulcers, tinea, scabies, and dental caries worms arise, engaging in all sorts of harmful activities. Not everyone has these worms, and even if present, they may not be numerous. Some have more, some fewer; women typically have more. These worms are vicious and represent a major affliction for humans. Bathing with Baiyan Grass (Houttuynia cordata) is beneficial; both roots and leaves can be used. As it is an aromatic herb and feared by Shi worms, it is effective. Whenever one wishes to take tonics or treat various diseases, it is necessary to first eliminate all internal worms and thoroughly clear out phlegm-fluids and retained food residues before taking tonics. Otherwise, the medicinal efficacy will certainly not be achieved.
Whenever one contracts Cold Damage (Shanghan) or epidemic febrile diseases, heat accumulates in the abdomen. Combined with poor appetite and empty stomach and bowels, the Three Worms (Roundworm/Ascaris, Red Worm/Fluke, Pinworm) become active seeking food, eroding the five zang organs and lower body parts. If the gums are pale without color, the tongue is entirely white, or severely, sores appear inside the lips, limbs feel heavy, the body emaciates, and one feels lethargic and prone to sleep, frequent examination of the nine orifices is required.
The Nine Worms arise from deficient zang-fu organs and weak spleen-stomach, caused by indiscriminate consumption of raw-cold, sweet, fatty, and greasy foods, and irregular diet and lifestyle leading to putrefaction and stagnation. This triggers their activity. Roundworms (Taenia/Cestoda) may present with black diarrhea; Blood worms eroding the lower part cause Fox-Huo disease (aphthous stomatitis and genital ulceration); sores on the lower lip indicate erosion of the viscera causing confusion/dizziness; sores on the upper lip also occur. The "Three Worms" refer to Chang Worm (Roundworm/Ascaris lumbricoides), Chi Worm (Red Worm/Fluke), and Tiao Worm (Pinworm). There are nine types in total, but Pinworms and Roundworms (Taenia/Cestoda) are most common. Roundworms result from eating beef and drinking white wine; if they connect into a strand one chi long, they can be fatal. When administering medication to expel them, it is best to wait until the segments disintegrate and exit completely. If severed, they regenerate; thus, rapid elimination is advised. Pinworms mostly affect children, though adults can suffer too. Symptoms include heart pain, vomiting clear fluid in the morning, and restlessness. Other worms are universally present in the stomach; Jiuchong Wan (Nine-Worm Pill) is suitable for their removal.
Roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides) are one of the nine worms, measuring one chi or five to six cun. They move due to visceral weakness or consumption of sweet/fatty foods. Onset involves abdominal pain, formation of masses, migration up and down, intermittent pain, and attacking the heart region. Abdominal heat, excessive salivation, and vomiting clear water occur. If they penetrate and damage the heart, death ensues. Pulse diagnosis: abdominal pain with a surging and large pulse indicates roundworms.
Heshi Wan (Cocklebur Pill, from *Shenghui Fang*) treats chronic worm infestations. Heart pain, vomiting water, inability to eat.
Ingredients: Heshi (Cocklebur), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, processed, skin and umbilicus removed), Yelangya (Wild Wolf Tooth), Binglang (Areca Nut), Ganqi (Dried Lacquer, crushed and stir-fried until smoke appears), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, slightly red, sliced).
Muxiang Binglang Wan (Costus and Areca Nut Pill, from *Zhizhi Fang*) kills lower-body worms.
Ingredients: Jixin Binglang (Chicken-heart Areca Nut, 1 liang), Muxiang (Costus Root), Heshi (Cocklebur), Guanzhong (Cyathulae Radix), Xihui (Tin Ash), Ganqi (Dried Lacquer, burned until smoke ceases), Shijunzi Rou (Breadnut Kernel, each half liang), Qingfen (Calomel). Take with millet gruel broth.
Xama Wan (Toad Pill, from *Zhizhi Fang*) kills worms.
Ingredients: Daxia Ma Gan (Large Toad, dried and roasted until charred, 1 piece), Muxiang (Costus Root), Jixin Binglang (Chicken-heart Areca Nut), Guanzhong (Cyathulae Radix), Taoren (Peach Seed, soaked and skin removed), Kulian Gen (Melia Root Bark, each 3 qian). Form pills with sour pomegranate root bark powder paste.
Xiongsha Wan (Realgar Cinnabar Pill, from *Zhizhi Fang*) kills various worms.
Ingredients: Heshi (Cocklebur), Wuyi (Chrysanthemum Seed), Ganqi (Dried Lacquer, stir-fried until smoke ceases), Bai Jiangcan (White Silkworm, stir-fried, each 3 qian), Guanzhong (Cyathulae Radix), Suan Shiliu Genpi (Sour Pomegranate Root Bark, sun-dried, each half liang), Zhusha (Cinnabar), Xionghuang (Realgar), Leiwan (Polyporus Umbellatus), Gansui (Kansui Root, each 1.5 qian). Grind into fine powder, form pills with rice flour paste, size of hemp seeds. Take 10 pills at dawn with millet gruel broth.
Muxiang Sanleng San (Costus and Burreed Powder, from *Ruizhutang Fang*) treats abdominal worms, sallow complexion, and all types of stagnation.
Ingredients: Heiqian Niu (Black Morning Glory Seed, half raw half fried, use generously), Dafuzi (Betel Nut), Binglang (Areca Nut), Leiwan (Polyporus Umbellatus), Xihui (Tin Ash, vinegar-fried), Sanleng (Sparganium Rhizome), Peng'ezhu (Curcuma Zedoaria Rhizome), Muxiang (Costus Root).
Qu Chongji Wan (Worm-Accumulation Expelling Pill)
Ingredients: Binglang (Areca Nut, 8 liang), Qianniu (Morning Glory Seed, 8 liang), Leiwan (Polyporus Umbellatus, 1.5 liang), Sanleng (Sparganium Rhizome, 2 liang), Pengzhu (Curcuma Zedoaria Rhizome, 2 liang, sliced separately and boiled in vinegar), Kulian Pi (Melia Bark), Muxiang (Costus Root). Form pills like paulownia seeds. Take 2 qian at the fourth watch with cold tea. Children take 1 qian. After expelling worms, drink white porridge for recovery.
Zhui Chong Wan (Worm-Chasing Pill)
Ingredients: Leiwan (Polyporus Umbellatus, 1 liang), Bai Wuyi (White Chrysanthemum Seed, 1 liang, fried), Binglang (Areca Nut, 1 liang), Shijunzi (Breadnut, kernel half liang), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, half liang), Heiqian Niu (Black Morning Glory Seed, head powder). Form pills like tung seeds. Take 30 pills for adults, 7 or 3 for children, based on deficiency/excess. For consumptive disease, take with Peach-Willow Head Decoction at dawn; for children, with sugar water on an empty stomach.
Shengjin Wan (Winning Gold Pill) treats worm agitation. Unbearable heart pain.
Ingredients: Guanzhong (Cyathulae Radix), Bai Jiangcan (White Silkworm, stir-fried), Wuyi (Chrysanthemum Seed), Ganqi (Dried Lacquer, stir-fried until smoke ceases), Binglang (Areca Nut, sliced), Gui (Cinnamon Twig, bark removed, each 1 liang), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, bark removed, ginger-processed).
Heshi San (Cocklebur Powder) treats internal accumulations in men and women, irregular worm attacks causing heart pain, and worms exiting via mouth or stool. Effective immediately.
Ingredients: Leiwan (Polyporus Umbellatus), Heshi (Cocklebur), Hei Gouji (Black Dog Spine, burned to remove hair), Shijunzi (Breadnut), Kulian Gen (Melia Root), Binglang (Areca Nut, each 1 liang). Add Qingfen (Calomel, 1 qian). Grind to powder. Take with warm water before meals.
Cangzhu Zexie Wan (Atractylodes and Alisma Pill, from *Bacui Fang*)
Due to flourishing ministerial fire in the Triple Burner restraining Yangming Dryness Metal, Wood overacts on Earth, generating five worms. Spleen governs great heat. If Triple Burner fire is drained and recedes, Metal gains qi to restrain Wood. Once restrained, five worms do not generate.
Ingredients: Cangzhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, skin removed, 4 liang), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange, each 2 liang), Diyü (Sanguisorba Root, 1 liang), Zaogaozi (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit Thorn, 1 liang), Qinjiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Rhizome, 2 liang). Grind to powder.
Wanling Wan (Myriad Spirits Pill) treats expelling worm accumulations.
Ingredients: Heiqian Niu (Black Morning Glory Seed, 1 jin, head powder 15 liang, raw), Jing Sanleng (Sparganium Rhizome, 5 liang), Pengzhu (Curcuma Zedoaria Rhizome, baked 2 liang), Dafuzi (Betel Nut, 1 jin, cleaned). Grind to powder and mix. Take with water.
