Postpartum generalized body pain is generally caused by the opening of all joints after childbirth, leading to abnormal blood flow. If Qi deficiency occurs, blood tends to stagnate in the meridians and muscles for many days without dispersing. This results in joint stiffness, tendon and vessel tension, causing inability to turn or bend the waist and back, immobility of hands and feet, accompanied by fever and headache. If treated as a cold damage (Shanghan) syndrome, it may induce sweating with twitching of tendons and vessels, cold extremities, and other complications. Instead, Chentong San should be used. For pain in the legs and lower back, this is because the Kidney governs the lower back and legs. In women, the Kidney is connected to the uterus (Bao). Childbirth damages Kidney Qi and injures the uterine collaterals. Before the deficiency recovers, wind-cold pathogens invade. Cold qi attacks the waist, causing lower back pain. If cold pathogenic factors remain stagnant in the spine for a long time, the pain persists. Subsequent pregnancy would likely cause further injury, as the uterine collaterals belong to the Kidney, which governs the waist.
