The Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian is the meridian of the Gallbladder. Its flourishing manifestation is in the beard. The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian is the meridian of the Kidney. Its flourishing manifestation is in the hair. The Chong and Ren vessels can nourish and moisten (the twelve meridians), thus causing the loss of beard and hair.
Shengfa Gao (Hair-Growing Ointment): Treats hair and beard loss caused by heat attacking.
Pine needles (cut), *Commelina communis* (Lianzi Cao), refined horse fat, jujube root bark (cut, each 1 sheng), leek root (cut), Vitex fruit (crushed, each 3 fen), bamboo sap, pig lard (each 2 sheng), Saposhnikovia root (Fangfeng), Angelica dahurica (Baizhi) (each 2 liang), Magnolia flower bud (Xinyi ren), Isatis root (Wulan), Cimicifuga rhizome (Shengma), Ligusticum chuanxiong rhizome (Xiong), Angelica pubescens root (Duhuo), Taxillus chinensis (Jisheng), Agastache rugosa (Huoxiang), Aquilaria wood (Chenxiang), Lysimachia fortunei (Lingling Xiang) (each 1 liang). Boil the jujube root to make juice. Soak the bamboo sap and other herbs overnight. Decoct with the fats until Baizhi turns yellow. The ointment is ready. Apply to the scalp and crown. Apply 3-5 times daily for best results.
Treats eyebrow and hair loss. (From *Qianjin Fang*)
Angelica dahurica (Baizhi), Aconite root (Fuzi), Saposhnikovia root (Fangfeng), Ligusticum chuanxiong rhizome (Xiong), Sarcandra glabra (Mangcao), Magnolia flower bud (Xinyi), Asarum root (Xixin), Scutellaria baicalensis root (Huangqin), Angelica sinensis root (Danggui), Sichuan pepper (Shujiao) (each 1 liang), Rhubarb (Dahuang) (1.5 liang). Decoct over low heat until Baizhi turns yellow. The ointment is ready. Wash the hair first, then apply the ointment as one would use hair oil. Avoid contact with the face, otherwise facial hair will grow.
Manjingzi Gao (Vitex Fruit Ointment) (From *Shenghui Fang*): Treats head wind caused by blood deficiency, resulting in baldness and failure of beard and hair to regrow.
Vitex fruit (Manjingzi) (3 liang), Taxillus chinensis (Sangjisheng) (3 liang), Mulberry root bark (Sanggen Bapi) (2 liang), Angelica dahurica (Baizhi) (2 liang), Leek root (Jiu gen) (2 liang), Deer horn chips (Lu jiao xie) (2 liang), Sesame oil (MAYou) (3 jin). Heat the ingredients in sesame oil until the jujube root bark chars.
Binfa Tuluo Shengfa Gao (Sideburn and Hair Loss Hair-Growing Ointment) (From *Shenghui Fang*)
Sarcandra glabra (Mangcao) (1 liang), Saposhnikovia root (Fangfeng), Cimicifuga rhizome (Shengma), Angelica dahurica (Baizhi), *Nephrolepis cordifolia* (Qinie) (each 2 liang), Dung beetle (Qianglang) (4 liang), Donkey fat, Cat fat (or Dog fat). Decoct over fire until it boils three to five times.
Treats head wind with hair loss, and formulas for dim vision.
Vitex fruit (Manjingzi shi) (3 liang, crushed), Taxillus chinensis (Sangjisheng), Mulberry root bark (Sanggen Bapi) (each 2 liang), Leek root (Jiu gen) [cut, 2 he], Angelica dahurica (Baizhi) (2 liang), Sweet flag rhizome (Gansong xiang), Bark juice (Pi zhi) (3 sheng). Mix and heat above. Wait three to five days until the jujube juice is exhausted and Baizhi turns yellow; the ointment is ready. Remove dregs. Rub into sideburns and hair during combing and washing daily. These herbs are soaked overnight. When ready to use, wrap loosely in cotton and decoct. Filter the finished ointment through cotton. Store in a new porcelain bottle. Use the thicker sediment first as it does not keep well. Do not let hands touch and spoil it.
Nanzhu Cao Jian Wan (Southern Candlestick Herb Decoction Pills) (From *Shenghui Fang*): Treats exhaustion of qi and blood, leading to baldness and failure of beard and hair to regrow. Even if they grow, they are yellow and not black. Suitable for consumption.
Southern Candlestick herb (Nanzhu cao), Acid pomegranate peel (Suan Shiliu pi), *Eclipta prostrata* seedlings (Hanlian zi miao) (each 5 jin). Collect these three herbs on the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu) and store in a porcelain jar, sealing tightly with mud.
Cortex Lycii radicis (Digupi) (4 liang), Prepared Rehmannia root (Shu Dihuang) (4 liang), Terminalia chebula reticulata (Helile pi), Zanthoxylum bungeanum (Qinjiao) (3 liang, remove eyes and closed-mouth ones, stir-fry lightly to remove moisture).
Grind into powder, mix with the previous ingredients, and form pills.
Mo Gao (Rubbing Ointment) (From *Shenghui Fang*, also known as Lanru Gao): Treats twenty types of wind in the head causing hair loss. Applying this cures conditions where the scalp looks like peeled skin or a copper basin.
Sichuan pepper (Shujiao) (3.5 liang), Sarcandra glabra (Mangcao) (2 liang), Dried ginger (Ganjiang), Pinellia tuber (Banxia), Cinnamon twig (Guixin), *Sophora flavescens* root (Ru - likely referring to Ku Shen or similar), Aconite root (Fuzi), Asarum root (Xixin) (each 1 liang, used raw).
Grind finely. Wash hair with rice water.

Fuling Zhush San (Poria and Atractylodes Powder) (Also known as Tongshen Xiao): Treats white hair and hair loss.
Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Baizhu) (1 jin, one formula uses Cangzhu), Poria (Fuling), Alisma rhizome (Zexie), Polyporus (Zhuling) (each 4 liang), Cinnamon twig (Guixin) (0.5 jin). Grind into powder. Take one Dao Gui per dose, three times daily. Mix with boiling water after meals. One formula uses wine or rice drink. After thirty days of taking, white hair turns black, complexion becomes ruddy, and bones and tendons become strong.
Treats beard and sideburn loss. (From *Shenghui Fang*)
Aconite root (Fuzi) (2 liang, remove skin and navel, use raw), Tribulus fruit (Jingshi) (2 liang), Biota tops (Baiye) (3 liang), Black chicken manure (Wuji Fen) (3 he), Pine needles (Songye) (3 liang). Mix well, store in a new porcelain jar, remove dryness for one hundred days, then take out. Grind into powder, mix with horse fat to form an ointment. Apply. Hair will grow after ten days.
Treats all winds of head wind, hair loss that does not regrow, twenty diseases of the head, dizziness, facial wind-stroke. Apply ointment.
*Ru* (3.5 liang, remove skin), Asarum root (Xixin), Aconite root (Fuzi) (each 2 liang), Cinnamon twig (Guixin) (0.5 liang). Grind and sieve. Use pig lard, ensuring no water enters.
Remove the membrane and red veins from 20 liang of lard. Grind until the lard melts completely and the medicine is ready. After grinding, continue milling to ensure no lard membrane remains. Squeeze juice through raw cloth. Store in a sealed container. First wash hair with ash juice from mulberry branches until clean. One method says: wash with mulberry ash for two days, let dry, then rub medicine into beard and hair until it penetrates. Rub daily. If not prepared in the twelfth month, mix with raw black sesame oil for excellent effect.
Treats sideburn hair loss, promoting growth. (From *Haishang Fang*)
Raw Biota tops (Sheng Baiye) (cut, 1 sheng), Pig lard (Zhugao) (3 sheng), Aconite root (Fuzi) (4 pieces). Grind into powder, mix with lard to make thirty pills. Wrap one pill in cloth, decoct in rice water. Washing hair with this prevents falling. Store herbs tightly sealed to prevent gas leakage.
Sansheng Gao (Three Sages Ointment) (From *Yifang Dacheng*): Treats mustache and hair loss, promoting regrowth.
Aconite root (Fuzi), Vitex fruit (Manjingzi), Biota seed (Baiziren) (each 3 fen). Mix and pound 3,000 times with black chicken fat. Store in a new porcelain vessel, seal for one hundred days, then take out. Mix with horse fat and apply to the head. Cover with a cloth, avoid wind. Apply three times daily; hair will grow. *Zhouhou Fang* does not use Baiziren; soak in wine and wash. One formula omits horse fat; apply directly to bald areas. Hair grows in three to five days, naturally strong and not falling.
Treats hair not falling when combed.
Torreya seeds (Feizi) (3, remove skin and crush), Walnut (Hetao) (2, remove skin), Biota leaves (Cebaiye) (4 pieces, palm-sized). Mix well. Freeze with snow ice for three days. Extract water to comb hair. Prevents falling permanently and moisturizes.

Sesame seeds (Mazi) (3 sheng, crushed), White Wutou leaves (Bai Wu Ye) (cut, a handful). Decoct in 2 dou of rice water for five to six boils. Remove dregs. Use for washing. Sideburns will not fall and will grow.

Duanshi Jiu (Smelted Iron Stone Wine): Treats continuous hair loss, and eyebrow/beard loss.
Use 3 sheng of smelted iron stone. Sieve finely, mix with water to dampen. Stir-fry until very cooked and charred. Throw in wood charcoal; ignition indicates readiness. Cool down, take 3 sheng. Place in silk bag. In spring and autumn, take after seven days. Maintain constant wine aroma. After one month of服用, new hair grows.
Mutou Tang (Head-Washing Decoction) (From *Haishang Fang*): Treats extremely deficient and cold pulse, beard and hair loss, promoting hair moisture.

Use 1 sheng of sesame seeds. Roast until black, press to extract oil. Apply to head. Excellent for long hair. Gradual growth after thirty days.
Huma San (Sesame Powder) (From *Wangshi Boji Fang*): Treats five types of leprosy, red nodules and numbness all over head, face, and body, foul smell in nose, beard and hair falling out.
Sesame seeds (Huma zi) (3 liang, light and floating), Polygonum multiflorum (Heshouwu), Vitex fruit (Manjingzi) (1 liang), Clematis root (Weilingxian), Nine-joint Acorus (Jijie Changpu), Sophora flavescens root (Kushen)... (text missing) ... Dry. As soon as symptoms appear, take. Effect seen in half a month. If chronic, take for one month to see effect. Reduce dose by half after fifty days. Cure permanently after one hundred days. Beard and hair will grow. For skin wind diseases, itching, scabies, etc., add four more herbs below, grind with the previous six, mix with lotus natural juice and wine, take one qian. Suitable for kidney wind attacks. If taking this medicine for three to five days, frequent warm bathing is required to expel pathogens.
