If a person's zang-fu organs are originally deficient, and their blood and qi are not substantial, they may contract wind-cold pathogenic factors. This leads to disharmony between Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi, and stagnation and obstruction in the meridians. When this coldness fails to dissipate, it causes the face to appear blue-green without swelling.
Yuanhua San (Radix Genkwa Powder), also known as Dengxian Jiu or Sanjian San, is recorded in *Qianjin Fang*.
It treats all types of wind-cold, phlegm-fluid retention, zheng pi (abdominal masses), and malaria.
Herbs: Yuanhua (*Genkflae Flos*), Jiegeng (*Platycodonis Radix*), Ziwan (*Asternis Radix*), Daji (*Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix*), Wangbuliuxing (*Vaccariae Semen*), Wutou (*Aconiti Radix*), Fuzi (*Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata*), Tianxiong (*Aconiti Radix Praeparata*), Baizhu (*Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma*), Wujiapi (*Acanthopanacis Cortex*), Raohua (*Polygalaefolii Euphorbiae Herba*), Yelangdu (*Stellerae Radix*), Mangcao (*Cannabis Fructus*), Shuyu (*Dioscoreae Rhizoma*), Yiyiren (*Coicis Semen*), Bajitian (*Morindae Officinalis Radix*), Xixin (*Asari Radix et Rhizoma*), Danggui (*Angelicae Sinensis Radix*), Xiongnu (*Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma*), Sheng Dihuang (*Rehmanniae Radix*), Shizhuyu (*Corni Fructus*), Duzhong (*Eucommiae Cortex*), Houpo (*Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex*), Huangqin (*Scutellariae Radix*), Shanzhuyu (*Corni Fructus*), Chuanganjiang (*Zingiberis Rhizoma*), Shaoyao (*Paeoniae Radix*), Guixin (*Cinnamomi Ramulus*), Wuzhuyu (*Evodiae Fructus*), Fangji (*Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix*), Yuanzhi (*Polygalae Radix*), Chuanjiao (*Zanthoxyli Pericarpium*), Duohuo (*Angelicae Pubescentis Radix*), Wuweizi (*Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus*), Mudanpi (*Moutan Cortex*), Juopi (*Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium*), Tongcao (*Tetrapanacis Medulla*), Chaihu (*Bupleuri Radix*), Baiziren (*Biotae Semen*, Shichangpu (*Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma*), Gaoben (*Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma*), Fuling (*Poria*), Xuduan (*Dipsaci Radix*). (Each above is 2 fen).
Preparation and Administration: The aforementioned herbs do not require processing, roasting, or decoction. Simply shake off the dust, grind into powder, and pass through a sieve for use. There are no other dietary restrictions, except that beans inhibit the efficacy of the medicine, so beans should not be consumed during treatment. *Qianjin Yifang* includes Mahuang (*Ephedrae Herba*), Banxia (*Pinelliae Rhizoma*), Chiche shizhe (*Alternanthera sessilis*), Liangjiang (*Alpiniae Katsumadai Rhizoma*), Ziwei (*Bignoniae Caulis*), but excludes Baizhu and Shizhuyu.
Dosage: Medicine powder 3 liang, Xi Qu (fine yeast) powder 2 sheng, Glutinous rice 3 sheng, Genuine wine 5 dou. First, boil the rice in three large dou of water to make porridge, ensuring it is thoroughly cooked. Add the medicine powder, cover tightly with cloth. Mix with water to form pills or take as powder.
Indications: Zheng jia (abdominal masses), hernia with stagnation, hardened masses from retained food, cough with rebellious Qi, and all kinds of stubborn, severe conditions involving accumulation. Symptoms include constant spitting, rebellious Qi rushing up to the chest and throat. These are caused by deficiency and cold in the Stomach.
Precautions: Suitable for chronic illnesses without vomiting or diarrhea. If the dosage is too high, causing severe, unceasing vomiting and diarrhea, administer one cubic inch of raw soybean powder mixed with water to stop it. Chewing Blue leaves (*Isatidis Folium*) or Black bean leaves also stops it immediately. This is only used in critical situations; minor ailments do not require it. For those with deficiency, Yang depletion, emaciation, and skeletal prominence, taking this formula provides great tonification. Within ten days to a month, the skin and muscles become plump and lustrous, complexion shines, marrow fills, and essence becomes abundant, restoring vitality comparable to young adults. It eliminates myriad diseases.
Specific Dosages for Conditions:
For various Wind diseases: Jiefeng (a type of wind disease), mix 20 liang of powder with 5 dou of wine. Zeifeng (robber wind), Refeng (hot wind), Dafeng (great wind) use the same ratio. Pianfeng (hemiplegic wind), Juzheng (carcinomatous wind), Tanhanfeng (paralytic wind), mix 12 liang of powder with 3 dou of wine. These seven types of wind involve heat, so cold-natured herbs must be added to restrain them, ensuring frequent bowel movements.
Zeifeng che tong (wind-induced pulling pain), mix 8 liang of powder with 2 dou of wine.
Shifeng Zhoubi (wind-damp bi-syndrome with generalized pain), upper body pain, waist and leg spasms, mix 12 liang of powder with 3 dou of wine.
Jinjie quanji (tendon and joint spasms), mix 8 liang of powder with 2 dou of wine.
After severe illness, if sweating does not occur, take three doses at the first sign of discomfort, each dose being 1 qian. For long-standing cases, take 1 sheng.
Pain upon eating hot food feeling like hammering or stabbing, mix 8 liang of powder with 2 dou of wine.
Kou yan yi xie (oral deviation and eye closure inability), if newly contracted, mix 4 liang of powder with 1 dou of wine; if long-standing, mix 12 liang with 3 dou of wine.
Head and face wind sensation like insects crawling or hairs on the face, mix 8 liang of powder with 2 dou of wine.
Dizziness upon rising that resolves after a while, mix 4 liang of powder with 1 dou of wine.
Chest oppression, vomiting, rebellious Qi, and neck stiffness due to Wind affecting the Heart, triggered by wind or rain, mix 8 liang of powder with 2 dou of wine.
Wind contracted from sores, causing jaw stiffness and spinal tension, five doses will stabilize, each dose 1 qian.
For various Cold diseases and accumulated cold causing emaciation, mix 4 liang of powder with 1 dou of wine; for robust individuals, mix 6 liang with 1.5 dou of wine. Phlegm-fluid retention and hernia follow the same ratios. Retained food and vomiting, mix 4 liang with 1 dou of wine. Zheng jia and intestinal borborygmus/belching, mix 8 liang with 2 dou of wine. Chronic transmission diseases and chronic fatigue follow the same ratios. Hard and cold hemorrhoidal masses, cough with rebellious Qi, mix 20 liang with 5 dou of wine. Ben tun (running piglet) cold Qi, mix 6 liang with 1.5 dou of wine. Ye ge (dysphagia) and cold dysentery follow the same ratios. Sudden onset of evil invasion causing abdominal distension, urgency, and near-death sensation, three doses stabilize, each dose 1 qian. Massive hematemesis follows the same ratio for Zhen Qi. Gu du (gu poison), five doses stabilize, each dose 1 qian. Wen nue (pestilential malaria) and Nue jie (malaria parasites) follow the same ratios, promising permanent cure, each dose 1 qian.
For women's various wind diseases, refer to previous clauses. Dai xia (leukorrhea), mix 12 liang with 3 dou of wine. Beng zhong (metrorrhagia), mix 6 liang with 1.5 dou of wine. Amenorrhea and infertility due to cold follow the same ratios. Intermittent infertility, mix 8 liang with 2 dou of wine. Irregular menstruation (too much or too little) causing infertility, mix 4 liang with 1 dou of wine. Postpartum wind-cold infertility, mix 6 liang with 2 dou of wine. For severe cases, mix 8 liang with 2 dou of wine. For very severe cases, mix 16 liang with 3 dou of wine. For extremely severe cases with uterine prolapse, mix 16 liang with 4 dou of wine.
*Qianjin Fang* commentary states: Looking back at ancient times, this formula was unseen. A renowned figure named Li Xiaolong claimed to have received it from the monk Huitong Daoist in Dingzhou in the early Sui Dynasty. It proved highly effective but was kept secret. Only the name was known, not the composition. I obtained it from Daoist Jingzhi and have had it for three ji (36 years). Contemporary famous doctors did not endorse it. However, its efficacy in emergencies is miraculous. Its preparation order is unconventional, requiring purgation before administration, which seems unreasonable. Yet, its emergency rescue effect is unique. Thus, divine efficacy does not adhere to conventional rules; profound principles transcend intellectual understanding. Like dragon songs summoning clouds and tiger roars generating winds, this is beyond ordinary comprehension, even for sages. Therefore, it is recorded here for future scholars to study, not only for its merit in saving lives but also for broadening knowledge.
