Evil qi lodges in the body. Therefore, one must tonify the insufficiency of Lung Metal and Kidney Water. This formula is established as a provisional measure. If used mistakenly in cases without seasonal diseases, damp-heat syndromes, or when Spleen Qi is robust, or when urination is frequent and the Kidneys and Liver are not affected by evil, it will severely drain True Yin, exhaust Kidney Water, and first damage the two eyes. Heart Fire overacting on the Spleen occurs because Blood is harmed by Fire evil and cannot disperse outward, causing Yang Qi to lie dormant within (the interior). The "Earth" refers to the human Spleen. One must use Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) to harmonize the Blood, and use a small amount of Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) to nourish True Yin. For syndromes of Spleen and Stomach insufficiency, Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) should be used in small amounts; it is the channel-guiding herb for the Foot-Yangming Stomach and Foot-Taiyin Spleen channels. It causes the pathway of Yang to migrate from right to left starting from the Spleen and Stomach. Shaoyang Gallbladder executes the Spring command, which is the root of generating and transforming all things. Adding a little Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) allows the Qi of all channels to migrate rightward, generating and transforming Yin and Yang Qi to nourish the harmonious Qi of Spring. Spleen deficiency arises because Heart Fire is hyperactive and overacts on Earth. Secondly, Lung Qi is affected by evil and injured by heat. One must use Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) in the largest amount, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) second, and Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) third. These three are sweet-warm Yang herbs. When the Spleen begins to weaken, Lung Qi is the first to fail; thus, Huang Qi is used. For upper asthma, shortness of breath, and reluctance to speak, Ren Shen must be used to tonify. If there is abdominal fullness, the dosage should be small to avoid aggravating the distension. In cases of acute Spleen-Stomach pain, or extreme Spleen-Stomach deficiency with abdominal cramping and tight skin, these herbs should be used in larger amounts. If Sheng Ma is added provisionally to guide, the evil migrating left may become firm and strong, refusing to retreat, and instead moving in the Yin pathways; therefore, one guides Yang Qi upward. If there is middle Jiao fullness, remove Gan Cao. If cough is severe, remove Ren Shen. If there is dry mouth and throat, add Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix). For Blood deficiency, add Ren Shen to tonify; when Yang is robust, it can generate Yin Blood. Add Dang Gui to harmonize the Blood. It is also appropriate to add Huang Bo to rescue Kidney Water, as sweet-cold herbs clear heat. If Qi floats and disturbs the Heart Spirit, use Zhu Sha An Shen Wan (Cinnabar Calming the Spirit Pill) to stabilize it. If there is epigastric stuffiness, add a little Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma). Qi disturbance in the chest is due to the interference of Clear and Turbid Qi, so use Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) to regulate it. It aids the ascent of Yang Qi and assists the action of sweet and pungent herbs. During late summer, when damp-earth pathogenic factors are rampant, Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) can be added provisionally to distribute and eliminate damp-heat from above and below. When dampness is excessive, food digestion fails, leading to loss of appetite. Add Chao Qu (Fermented Wheat Mass) to digest food. Add Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), and Ren Shen to purge fire and tonify Lung Qi. If there is abdominal fullness, blockage, and constipation, one must act according to the seasonal Qi provisionally, using seasonal Qi to purge descending turbid Qi. Borrowing cold Qi within sweet herbs is called "sweet-cold purging great heat." One must also use more pungent-warm agents to disperse cold evil and less Huang Bo. Clear Qi in the Yin aspect refers to the decline of Spleen-Stomach Qi failing to ascend Yang Qi. Thus, Sheng Ma and Chai Hu are used to assist pungent-sweet flavors, guiding the ascent of Yuan Qi to prevent undigested stool diarrhea. Obstruction of Yang Qi at the throat preventing exit is called "Sai" (Blockage). Failure of Yin Qi to descend is called "Ye" (Choking). Ye occurs between the throat and diaphragm, blocking the meridians, causing open mouth, staring eyes, and near-asphyxiation. One should first use pungent-sweet herbs with Yang properties to guide Stomach Qi to treat the root, and add herbs for obstruction to treat the branch. In winter, Yin Qi greatly assists Yin evil externally; add Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus), a large-hot, large-pungent-bitter herb, to purge Yin cold. In summer, when Yang is abundant, add Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Yi Zhi Ren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus), and Huang Bo to disperse cold and vent rebellious Yin Fire. Additionally, make Huang Lian into pills separately; take 70-80 pills of each on an empty stomach after residual food has cleared. Wait a moment and eat good food to suppress the medicine, preventing stagnation in the Stomach. If eating little and lacking hunger, add Chao Qu. If epigastric stuffiness occurs after eating, take Ju Pi Zhi Zhu Wan (Tangerina Peel and Atractylodes Macrocephala Pill) separately. If the pulse is wiry, limbs are full and closed, difficult defecation, and epigastric stuffiness, add Gan Cao, Huang Lian, and Chai Hu. If bowel obstruction with dryness and epigastric stuffiness, add Huang Lian, Tao Ren (Persicae Semen), and a little Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Dang Gui Shen (Dang Gui Root). If epigastric stuffiness and oppression, add Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Huang Lian. If epigastric stuffiness with abdominal distension, add Wu Wei Zi, Bai Shao, Suo Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus). If cold weather, add a little Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) or Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex). If epigastric stuffiness due to middle cold, add Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), Huang Lian. If epigastric stuffiness with vomiting and rebellion, add Huang Lian, Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Ju Pi. In winter, add Huang Lian, Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos), Huo Xiang Ye (Agastaches Folium). If dry mouth and throat, add Wu Wei Zi, Ge Gen. If hypochondriac urgency or severe pain, add Chai Hu, Gan Cao. If chest fullness and depression, add Ju Pi Hong (Tangerine Red Peel), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) in small amounts. If cold in the abdomen or whole body, or Qi stagnation, add Qing Pi, Chen Pi, Mu Xiang. These three are fixed methods. In winter, add Yi Zhi Ren, Cao Dou Kou (Alpiniae Katsumadai Semen). Use sparingly in summer, adding Huang Lian. In autumn, if Qi is stagnant and food does not go down, add Bing Lang (Arecae Semen), Cao Dou Kou, Suo Sha Ren, or Bai Dou Kou (Cardamomi Albi Semen). In spring, if food does not go down, use more Qing Pi and less Chen Pi, adding wind-dispersing herbs to dispel cold covering the exterior. If early spring is still cold, add a little pungent-hot herb to supplement insufficient Spring Qi, serving as an assistant to wind herbs. Yi Zhi Ren and Cao Dou Kou are suitable. If the pulse is wiry showing wind-movement signs, use wind herbs to unblock it. If the pulse is choppy feeling Qi stagnation, add Dang Gui Shen, Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Tuber), Mu Xiang, Qing Pi, Chen Pi. If cold, add Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Chen Pi, Huang Bo. If chest blockage or Qi closure with confusion, Lung Qi is stagnant; use Qi-breaking herbs: Qing Pi, Chen Pi, plus a little Mu Xiang, Bing Lang. In winter, add Wu Zhu Yu, Ren Shen. Blockage caused by external cold restraint results in a wiry or slightly tight Cun Kou pulse, indicating great cold in the chest. If accompanied by a white slippery tongue coating, this indicates Heat in the Dantian and Cold in the Chest; add Huang Bo, Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix). Do not treat as a cold syndrome. If abdominal pain occurs in autumn/winter cold weather, add Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma)... Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) one or two doses. Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (from *Ba Cui Fang*) treats Spleen-Stomach weakness, injury from diet and fatigue, internal injury insufficiency diseases.
Ancient sages exhausted the transformation of Yin and Yang, investigated the boundary of life and death. The *Nei Jing* states that humans rely on Stomach Qi as the root. Humans receive Grain Qi... enters the Stomach... combines with... Qi... mutual... flow... Or thirst persists, skin cannot withstand Wind-Cold generating chills and fever. This is because Yin Fire rushes upward, causing high Qi, asthma, and irritability, manifesting as headache, thirst, and洪 (surging) pulse. Spleen-Stomach Qi flows downward, preventing Grain Qi from ascending and floating. The Spring generating command does not operate, so there is no Yang to protect Ying and Wei, unable to withstand Wind-Cold, generating chills and fever. All these are caused by insufficiency of Spleen-Stomach Qi. However, symptoms from external Wind-Cold are similar but essentially different. Internal injury to Spleen-Stomach injures Qi; external Wind-Cold injures Form. Injury to the exterior is Excess, treated by draining. Injury to the interior is Deficiency, treated by tonifying. Sweating, purging, vomiting, and attacking methods are all draining. Warming, harmonizing, regulating, and nourishing methods are all tonifying. If internal injury insufficiency is mistaken for external excess and drained, it makes deficiency more deficient. Making Excess more Excess and Deficiency more Deficient, damaging the insufficient and supplementing the excessive—such deaths are killed by doctors. So what to do? Answer: Only use pungent-warm agents to tonify the middle, raise Yang, and use sweet-cold to purge Fire, then it will heal. Fatigue is warmed, loss is benefited. Warmth can remove great heat. Bitter-cold drugs to purge ear (likely error/contextual) are strictly forbidden. Now establish this formula to govern.
Huang Qi (Half qian, one qian if severe fatigue/heat) Dang Gui Shen (Two qian, wine-washed, baked/dried, mildly harmonizes Blood) Ren Shen (Remove radix tip, Three qian, has... meridian)
Sheng Ma (... drug... also possible)
Zhu Sha An Shen Wan (from *Ba Cui Fang*) For those with weak Spleen-Stomach, due to diet and fatigue, Heart Fire becomes hyperactive and overacts on Earth... Secondly, Lung Qi is affected by evil, requiring most Huang Qi, then Gan Cao, Ren Shen. If Spleen is weak, Lung Qi fails first, so use Huang Qi to... benefit skin/hair and close pores, preventing spontaneous sweating and damaging Yuan Qi. For upper asthma/shortness of breath, use Ren Shen to tonify. Heart Fire overacting on Spleen requires roasted Gan Cao's sweetness to purge fire and tonify Yuan Qi in Spleen-Stomach. For acute Spleen-Stomach pain and extreme deficiency with tight abdominal skin, use heavily. Acute conditions require soothing. Clear Qi in Stomach is below, must add Sheng Ma, Chai Hu to guide. Guiding Huang Qi, Gan Cao upward supplements scattered Stomach Qi, relieving Dai Mai tension. These two bitter-pale, thin-flavored herbs are Yang within Yin, guiding Clear Qi upward. Huang Qi, Ren Shen, Gan Cao are primarily sweet-warm, essential for Spleen-Stomach deficiency. Qi chaos in chest is Clear/Turbid interference, use peeled Ju Pi to regulate. It aids Yang ascent to dissipate stagnant Qi, assisting sweet/pungent herbs. Dry mouth/throat adds Ge Gen. Spleen-Stomach Qi deficiency cannot ascend, Yin Fire harms generating Qi, Ying/Blood severely depleted, Ying Qi not nourishing, Yin Fire blazing, latent fire in Blood, daily burning, Blood/Qi daily decreasing. Pericardium governs Blood; blood loss means Heart lacks nourishment, causing Heart chaos and vexation. Disease named... ... means Heart confused and vexed/restless.
