To open the stomach, nourish Qi, and promote appetite.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (remove the rhizome head), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (coat with honey water, stir-fry until dry), Shanyu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Bai Fuling (Poria) (remove the skin), Sumi (Setariae Frumentum) (lightly stir-fry), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang, stir-fry until dry).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water, decoct together with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Zao (Jujubae Fructus) until reduced to 7 fen. If there is a complete loss of appetite after a severe illness, add 1 liang of Baibian Dou (Phaseoli Semen Album) steamed; this formula is named Bazhen San (Eight Treasures Powder).
I formulated this prescription; it is warm and neutral without being hot. Whenever following recovery from Shanghan (Cold Damage), Nueji (Malaria), or Zhongshu (Heatstroke), use this to regulate the Spleen and Stomach. Take 3-4 times daily; after ten days, food intake doubles.
Treats chronic deficiency of Spleen Yuan (Source Qi), inability to eat, fluid retention with hypochondriac pain.
Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) (10 liang, lightly stir-fry), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (5 liang), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (processed), Guigui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (remove rough bark, do not expose to fire, each 3 liang), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) (soak in boiling water seven times, bake), Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper) (remove eyes and closed ends, lightly stir-fry until sweat appears, each 2 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, bind with thin paste into pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take 30-50 pills per dose, wash down with Shengjiang Tang (Ginger Decoction), before meals when slightly empty-stomached. If there is fluid retention, add Banxia Qu (Pinelliae Massa Praeparata) 2 liang. In mid-autumn of the Guihai year, I made several doses for self-administration, and food intake increased significantly.
Harmonizes Qi, regulates the middle jiao, and promotes appetite.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (remove rough bark, stir-fry with ginger juice), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (stir-fry), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (processed), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (remove the rhizome head), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (wash, remove rhizome head, slice thinly, bake dry), Fuling (Poria) (remove skin), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma) (stir-fry until dry; all above in equal proportions).
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water and 2 Zao (Jujubae Fructus), decoct together until reduced to 8 fen, strain and discard dregs. Take at any time. This is Fang Lao's (Pang Anshi's) prescription.
Treats Spleen and Kidney weakness, complete inability to eat.
Poguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus) (4 liang, stir-fry until fragrant), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen) (2 liang, raw).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Use 49 large fat Zao (Jujubae Fructus) and 4 liang of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), sliced, boil together until the dates are soft. Remove the ginger, peel the dates, remove pits, use the flesh, grind into a paste. Mix with the medicinal powder and pound into pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, wash down with Yantang (Salt Water Decoction).
There was a person who could not eat at all; taking Spleen-tonifying medicines yielded no effect. I taught him this prescription; upon taking it, he happily regained his appetite. This disease cannot be entirely attributed to Spleen deficiency. It is likely due to weak Kidney Qi and deteriorated True Yuan (True Source Qi), naturally failing to digest food. It is like placing grains in a cauldron without fire underneath; although all day passes, the rice will not cook, let alone digest. Huang Luzhi once recorded taking Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen), thoroughly washed, soaked in wine, dried in the sun, taken by spoonfuls with wine daily; after ten days, eating and drinking became as smooth as snow melting in hot soup, also understanding this principle.
