There was a high official whose mother, aged seventy, suffered from stroke with spasm of hands and feet. She had been nourished with Fang Zi (Aconite) type medicines. One day, her face became swollen, and the backs of her hands also swelled. A national physician who usually provided medicine diagnosed it as a Shui Bing (Water Disease) and wanted to use Da Ji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix) and Qian Niu to purge and guide it out. The family was greatly alarmed and anxious, summoning me to discuss. I said, "Su Wen states that facial swelling is called Feng (Wind), and swelling of the calves is called Shui (Water). This is due to excessive consumption of Aconite, leading to a syndrome of deficiency generating internal wind and heat. There must be choking in the throat and discomfort in the chest diaphragm." He agreed. I then administered Sheng Ma Niu Bang Tuan Shen Tang (Cimicifugae, Arctii, and Codonopsis Decoction), followed by Zhi Mu Tang (Anemarrhenae Decoction). All were cured within three days.
