To treat Bi syndrome caused by Wind-Cold-Dampness, characterized by numbness and insensitivity of the limbs.
Chuanwu (Raw, peel and tip removed, ground into powder)
Take well-cooked white rice to make half a bowl of porridge. Add four qian of the herbal powder to the rice. Simmer over low heat until cooked. The porridge should be thin, not thick. Add approximately one teaspoon of ginger juice and three tablespoons of honey. Stir well. Drink on an empty stomach; it is best when warm. If the condition involves Dampness invasion, add two qian of Coicis Semen powder and increase the amount of rice to cook one full bowl for consumption.
This porridge is highly effective in treating inability to move the hands, feet, and four limbs, and severe pain making lifting difficult. Those with these symptoms can take it prophylactically. Zuo Qiuming stated: "Wind pathogenic factors easily cause diseases in the extremities." The term "four extremities" refers to the four limbs. The Spleen governs the four limbs. When Wind pathogenic factors invade the Liver, they affect the Spleen. Since the Spleen is controlled by the Liver, the disease manifests in the extremities. The Qi of grain guides the Wind-Damp dispelling herbs directly into the Spleen meridian, thus calming the four limbs. This formula is more potent than typical Yang-warming agents. I often prepare this prescription to share with others, and those who take it show excellent efficacy.
To treat Kidney injury by Dampness, where the Kidney fails to nourish the Liver, causing the Liver to generate internal Wind, resulting in Wind-Dampness that flows into the tendons and bones of the four limbs, or enters the shoulder muscles, causing pain that gradually spreads to the fingers. Use Yiyiren San (Coix Seed Powder).
Yiyiren (Coix Seed) (one liang) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (wash, remove rhizome, slice thinly, dry by baking) Xiaochuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) (processed) Gancao (Licorice Root) (honey-fried) Guanzi (Cinnamon Twig) (remove rough bark, do not expose to open fire) Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix) (processed, remove peel and tip) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (remove woody core) Yinyu (Ilicis Cornutae Fructus) (remove stem, chop, stir-fry) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (remove rhizome)
(Above herbs are each ban liang)
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Take two qian per dose, mixed with wine, taken on an empty stomach and before bedtime. Three doses daily.
To treat five types of Bi syndrome, occurring intermittently in the legs and arms. This is due to deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach, where Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) fails to warm the muscle spaces, allowing Wind-Cold-Dampness to adhere.
Xiaochuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (processed, remove peel and umbilicus) Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (honey-fried) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (remove woody core) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (wash, remove rhizome, slice thinly, dry by baking) Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (sprinkle with wine, steam nine times, sun-dry nine times, bake, weigh) Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (do not expose to open fire) Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (remove sprouts, wash clean) Gancao (Licorice Root) (honey-fried, above herbs in equal proportions)
Grind all ingredients into a coarse powder. Take four qian per dose. Add one dan and a half of water, three slices of fresh ginger, and one jujube. Decoct together until three-tenths of the liquid remains. Strain off the dregs. Take before meals, three times daily. Regular use does not cause stagnation or heat, and additionally eliminates accumulated cold.
