Phoenix Eye Seed (Fengyancao)
The fragrant variety is called Chun (Toona sinensis), with a sweet and neutral nature, non-toxic. The foul-smelling variety is called Chu (Cedrela sinensis), with a bitter and warm nature, toxic. Insects found in the Chu tree are referred to as "Chu Ji".
The Chu tree produces pods containing seeds that resemble eyeballs, known as Phoenix Eye Seed (Fengyancao). It is used in the "Lianzhen Pill" within fertility circles, specifically treating damp-heat in the marrow organs. It is suitable for elderly individuals who have historically enjoyed rich and abundant diets.
Invention (Pharmacological Elaboration): The white bark of the Chun root has a cold nature and can astringe blood. It treats diseases caused by damp-heat, such as dysentery with turbid discharge, leukorrhea, seminal emission, and nocturnal spermatorrhea, possessing the function of drying phlegm. However, it should not be used abruptly if there is still stagnation of qi in dysentery, nor should it be taken for metrorrhagia and leukorrhea belonging to yin deficiency. This is because Chun bark is red in color and enters the blood level, making it suitable for patients with chronic dysentery causing blood injury. Chu bark is white in color and enters the qi level, making it suitable for acute dysentery with qi stagnation. These distinctions must not be ignored or confused in usage.
Tamarisk Leaf and Tamarisk Residue (Qiyè Qīzǐ)
Pungent, bitter, salty, warm, and toxic. It must be stir-fried until smoke ceases; otherwise, it damages the stomach and intestines. Nowadays, many people use tamarisk residue as a fake substitute; only those that are solidified like bricks are considered good.
*Shennong Bencao Jing* states that it treats severe injuries, tonifies the middle jiao, reconnects tendons and bones, fills the marrow and brain, calms the five zang organs, treats the "five slacknesses and six tensions," and wind-cold-damp bi syndrome. Raw lacquer removes long worms (parasites). Long-term consumption lightens the body and delays aging.
Invention: Dry lacquer ash is pungent and warm, with a nature that descends effectively to break blood stasis. Therefore, it reduces swelling, kills parasites, and unblocks amenorrhea, all utilizing its ability to remove evil blood. *Shennong Bencao Jing*'s treatment of severe injuries and tonification of the middle jiao relies on its power to break old blood and generate new blood. Generally, when there is blood stasis and stagnation in the stomach, yang qi becomes exhausted and cannot distribute to the interior and exterior. Consequently, the zang-fu organs, tendons, bones, marrow, and brain lose nourishment, leading to abnormal transportation and transformation functions and flaccidity of the limbs. Using this herb eliminates the stasis. Once the middle qi is restored, severe injuries are healed, and tension/flaccidity harmonizes. Raw lacquer removes long worms; thus, in *Qianjin Fang*, formulas for removing the three types of parasites use it as the sovereign drug. Once the parasites are removed, lightening the body and prolonging life is self-evident, though ordinary people find it difficult to take it for a long time. Li Gao (Zhang Yuansu) said, "It cuts away deep-seated, hardened stagnations and breaks long-standing coagulated blood stasis," which fully describes the utility of dry lacquer. Those without blood stasis must strictly avoid it, as it severely injures Ying-blood and damages stomach qi. Therefore, individuals with weak stomachs often experience vomiting after taking it. This seems contrary to the meaning of *Shennong Bencao Jing* but is actually consistent. For postpartum syncope due to blood, smoking with an old lacquer vessel wakes the patient immediately. This also follows the principle of descending blood stasis. Applying true lacquer combined with Manis pentadactyla scales provides the most rapid blood-breaking effect. Women with blood deficiency and amenorrhea are strictly prohibited from using it. Those allergic to lacquer can chew Sichuan peppercorn and apply it to the mouth and nose to prevent lacquer dermatitis. If poisoned by lacquer, raw crab juice or Perilla frutescens can detoxify it. Lacquer leaf applied externally treats Ziyunfeng (purple cloud wind, presenting as purple facial swelling), utilizing its blood-dispersing function. Lacquer seed specifically treats lower bleeding and is used in *Qianjin Fang*. One must carefully examine for the absence of stagnation before administering; do not prescribe indiscriminately.
