[Tiger Bone]
Pungent, slightly warm, non-toxic. The bone with a yellow and lustrous appearance is of good quality. If it has a bluish-black color, it indicates the tiger was killed by an arrow poisoned with herbal medicine; such bone contains toxicity and should not be used. It should be processed by frying with butter until yellow and brittle before use.
[Commentary]
Tiger belongs to Yin, while Wind belongs to Yang; Tiger corresponds to Metal, while Wind corresponds to Wood. The roaring of a tiger generates wind, illustrating the principle that Wood is controlled by Metal and Yang emerges from Yin organs. Therefore, tiger bone can expel wind and relieve pain, strengthen sinews and bones, and is a crucial herb for treating wind diseases characterized by tendon spasms and wind-toxin in bone joints. The strength of a tiger's entire body originates from its front legs; thus, the knee and tibia are the most effective parts, with the left anterior tibia being particularly excellent, as tigers rest their heads on this part when sleeping. However, selecting the corresponding tiger bone based on the location (anterior/posterior, left/right) of the disease yields even faster results. In the treatment of disorders involving Yin and Yang meridians, tiger eye calms the soul (Shen). The *Qianjin Fang* uses Tiger Eye Decoction or Pills to treat manic psychosis, prepared by soaking in wine and roasting dry. Since these are hard to obtain instantly, Pearl Powder may be substituted, primarily for its soul-calming effect. Tiger bone also treats regurgitation and vomiting; calcined over a new tile until the original nature remains preserved, mixed evenly with Pingwei San powder, and taken orally on an empty stomach with plain water (3 qian), it is effective. Tiger skull bone, soaked in wine, treats cephalalgia due to wind. Made into a pillow, it prevents malaria. Tiger canine teeth dispel evil spirits and kill parasites, and are used in formulas for "Chuan Shi" (consumptive disease like tuberculosis).
[Elephant Skin]
Salty, warm, non-toxic.
[Commentary]
The elephant inherits the Qi of Metal from the West. The function of Metal is storage and it should not make noise; making noise contradicts the image of Metal, which is highly inappropriate. Elephant skin is specifically astringent. Its flesh heals within half a day after being pierced by axes or knives. Therefore, for open wounds (Jin Chuang) that fail to close, the skin, calcined until the original nature remains preserved, is applied externally. For ointments promoting tissue regeneration, slices are prepared by mixing with butter and roasting. Ivory is sweet and cold; it can resolve carbuncles and various toxins. Consumed as a liquid suspension, it nourishes tendons and bones. Ivory powder mixed with honey is applied topically to treat foreign objects like iron fragments embedded in flesh. Scrapings from old combs, taken frequently in warm water, treat splinters of bamboo/wood and fishbones stuck in the throat, causing immediate expulsion. If not expelled, repeat administration until expulsion occurs; only thin scrapings are effective.
[Rhinoceros Horn]
Bitter, slightly salty, very cold, non-toxic. Shaved into flakes, genuine horn smells fragrant when touched with a warm palm, whereas fake horn smells foul. Avoid using with halogenated salts, Aconitum carmichaelii (Wu Fu Zi), or Aconitum kusnezoffii (Wu Tou). Pregnant women should avoid it, as it can dissipate fetal Qi.
[Commentary]
The spiritual essence of the rhinoceros concentrates in its horn. The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian is the sea of food and fluids; dietary drugs first enter here. Thus, Rhinoceros Horn cools blood, disperses blood stasis, and treats conditions such as blood accumulation, mania, macules, and pustules, by unblocking blood stagnation in the Yangming channel. *Bie Lu* records its use for treating typhoid fever, epidemic fevers, headache, chills and fever, and various toxins. Baopuzi states that the rhinoceros consumes toxic herbs and thorns of trees, enabling it to detoxify. In regions plagued by gu poison, stirring food or drink with a rhino horn tendon produces white foam if toxic, but not if non-toxic. Lei Xiao noted that deer antlers and rhino horn tips contain their most potent energy. Rhinoceros Horn is the specific remedy for hematemesis, epistaxis, and hematochezia/hematuria, typically formulated as Dihuang Tang with Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao Dihuang Tang). It is strictly contraindicated in patients with chronic Qi deficiency, as it depletes Qi and Blood. It is essential for cases of smallpox with severe blood-heat toxin. However, it is strictly contraindicated during the 6th-7th day when pustules form, as it converts pus into fluid. After scabbing, residual toxins causing abscesses do not require avoidance. Only smallpox cases with Qi deficiency and severe toxin must strictly avoid it. Due to its very cold nature, it should not be used in patients without severe heat pathogens. For poisoning by venomous arrows, piercing the wound with rhino horn leads to immediate recovery. For mountain miasma or aquatic toxins, drinking juice ground from fresh rhino horn provides immediate relief.
