药有效。
Sweet and warm, with slight toxicity.
Invention: This bird feeds on the seedlings of Aconitum carmichaelii (Fuzi) and Pinellia ternata (Banxia). Partridges that favor eating these plants are prone to causing swelling and pain in the throat and head; Glycyrrhizae Radix (Licorice Root) and Zingiberis Rhizoma (Fresh Ginger) can both detoxify them. The *Tang Bencao* states that partridge treats poisoning from wild Gelsemium (*Yege*), mushrooms, and native gold in Lingnan, as well as warm malaria. For those suffering from chronic illness near death, boiling the partridge with its feathers in wine for ingestion, or crushing it raw to drink the juice, is most effective. *Ri Hua Zi* states that taking it with wine primarily treats fatal Gu Qi (parasitic disease). Meng Shen claims it can restrain pathogenic factors in the five zang organs, enhance heart power, and make one intelligent.
Sweet and neutral, non-toxic.
Invention: Quail mainly treats abdominal distension resembling a drum, resolves heat accumulation, and treats pediatric gan syndrome (malnutrition). Note: Quail is believed to be transformed from frogs, sharing similar qi properties. Frogs and toads both resolve heat accumulation, treat gan syndrome, promote diuresis, and reduce edema. Thus, quail's ability to reduce abdominal distension shares the same efficacy. After consumption, substances resembling goose fat are excreted, leading to recovery after several times.
Salty and neutral, non-toxic.
Invention: There are many varieties of pigeons, but only white ones are used in medicine. They can detoxify various medicines and benefit those suffering from chronic weakness and emaciation, regulating essence and boosting qi. They treat malignant sores, scabies, tinea, wind sores, vitiligo, and scrofula ulcers. When cooked and taken with wine, there is no unsuitability. Pigeon eggs can dilute the severity of smallpox/rashes. Their feces' odor can kill tubercle bacilli (zai chong), so patients with consumptive diseases often keep them.
Colloquially called ying, i.e., Oriolus chinensis (Golden Oriole), known as Cangheng in the *Monthly Ordinances*.
Sweet and warm, non-toxic.
Invention: This bird sings first upon sensing spring yang qi, thus it can tonify yang qi. Consuming it makes one less jealous because the harmonious yang qi overcomes yin toxicity. Note: The *Yang Zhi Du Lun* states that Empress Dowager Wu of Emperor Wu of Liang was jealous. Someone suggested using Cangheng as a dietary therapy for treatment, so she ate it, and her jealousy indeed decreased by half.
Sweet and warm, non-toxic. Those taking Atractylodes macrocephala (Baizhu) should avoid eating it.
Invention: Sparrows belong to yang and have a lustful nature, thus they can strengthen sexual function. They are most suitable for those with fire deficiency, impotence, and cold semen. Those with yin deficiency and hyperactive fire must strictly avoid them. Sparrow eggs treat blood depletion. In *Su Wen*, the Si Wu Ce Gu Yi Ru Wan uses sparrow eggs most effectively. If sparrow eggs are unavailable, raw sparrow liver can substitute. Sparrow head blood treats night blindness (que mang). Sparrow brain, wrapped in silk and inserted into the ear, treats deafness. Male sparrow droppings are named Bai Ding Xiang (White Tallow), which removes corneal opacities and facial black spots. Only straight ones are selected, appearing identical to rat droppings, yet they are effective when used in medicine.
