The spring and autumn equinoxes are times when Yin and Yang separate.
[Flavor and Nature] Acrid, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats pathogenic factors in the five Zang organs; cold-heat pain in the female genitalia; zheng zha (abdominal masses); blood obstruction leading to sterility. Long-term consumption lightens the body and harmonizes the complexion.
[Verification] It is stated: Grows in the valleys of Changshan; also found in Guan-Shan, Yizhou, and Yanzhou. It grows in clusters on rocks. At the Spring Equinox, the perennial roots sprout again, growing three to five cun high. The leaves are fine like those of Platycladus orientalis (Cypress), curled and hidden like chicken feet roots, purple-red with many rootlets. Harvested in the sixth and seventh lunar months and dried in the shade. Processing: Boil in salt water for half a day, then boil in well water for another half day.
[Commentary] It is said: The leaf shape resembles cypress, curled and contracted, hence named Juanbai (Curled Cypress). Also known as Baozu (Leopard Foot) or Qiugu (Seeking Thigh), names derived from its morphology. Also known as Wansui (Ten Thousand Years) or Changsheng Busi Cao (Grass of Immortality), referring to its roots dwelling on rocks, enduring the cold of the year. Also known as Jiaoshi (Time of Intersection), indicating it sprouts at the Spring Equinox, when Yin separates from Yang, allowing it to interact and merge with Yang. Thus, it treats pathogenic invasion in the most Yin locations of the five Zang organs, as well as cold-heat in the female genitalia, zheng zha, and sterility due to blood obstruction. This addresses the condition where Yin does not interact with Yang; its efficacy causes Yin Qi to rise rapidly and Yang Qi to penetrate forward, achieving mutual matching. It further allows Yang Qi to overflow outward, thereby harmonizing the complexion and lightening the body, illustrating the principle that "Yang resides outside, serving as the agent of Yin."

[Flavor and Nature] Sweet, warm in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats rebellious Qi and pathogenic factors in the heart and abdomen; tonifies deficiency; wind-cold in the uterus causing ten years of infertility. Long-term consumption warms the Middle Jiao, lightens the body, and prolongs life.
[Verification] It is stated: Produced in the valleys of Mount Tai. Lingbiao Luyi records: In Longzhou mountains, Ziyan Shi (Purple Quartz) is abundant; its color is pale purple, texture crystal clear; regardless of size, it possesses five edges, with both ends resembling arrowheads. Compared to Baiyan Shi (White Quartz), its therapeutic power is doubled. Taiping Yulan records: From Daxian Mountain to Mount Tai, Ziyan Shi is produced. The stones of Mount Tai are exceptionally rare. Those from Yangshan County in Pingshi have a deep color and are excellent. Those from Beilong Mountain in Wucheng County are very bright but small and black. Those from Baoshan in Dongguan County were formerly offered as tribute. Fan Mountain in Jiangxia also produces it. Small hills in Gutao Village, Yongjia produce stones with good edges but are small and thin. The best quality must have five edges as if cut, purple color reaching the tip, resembling dice (chupu). Processing: Calcine over fire and quench in vinegar, repeating seven times. Grind into powder, wash with water (water levigation) three to four times, dry and use in medicine. Changshi (Longstone) acts as its guide drug. It is incompatible with Bianqing (Blue Mineral) and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root). It is repelled by Guijia (Tortoise Shell), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), and Maijujiang (Polygonatum Odoratum? Note: Text says 麦句姜, likely a specific local name or typo for a herb, kept as is); combined with Fuling (Poria) and Renshen (Ginseng Root), it treats stagnation of Qi in the heart. Tian... My ancestor said: Warm and moist like jade, allowing the light of the heart to communicate; those who ingest it will not suffer from reckless agitation; the benefits gained are immeasurable.
[Commentary] Purple is described as intermixed red and black, the color of Kan-Li intersection. Stone is the bone of the mountain; Ying (Essence) is the flower of the stone. Gen Mountain forms the substance (Ti), while Zhen Thunder provides the function (Yong). Therefore, it treats insufficiency of substance and function, which allows pathogens to enter the heart and abdomen, causing cough and rebellious Qi. This is precisely because the Li trigram loses its empty center, and the Kan trigram loses its solid center. If wind-cold is in the uterus, causing ten years of infertility that cannot be cured, relying on the intersection of Kan and Li, both substance and function are manifested, and pregnancy can be achieved after ten years. Long-term consumption warms the middle and lightens the body, verifying the efficacy of filling Kan to support Li.
(The empty center and solid center represent the profound mutual root of Yin and Yang.)
