[Shangpin (Superior Grade) of the Benjing]
[Flavor and Nature] Pungent, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats pathogenic factors, repels toxic epidemics, warm diseases, and demonic influences; strengthens willpower; primarily treats strangury and leukorrhea/bleeding. Long-term consumption prevents nightmares and sleep paralysis.
[Evidence] It is stated: Mugwort (Muxiang) belongs to the herb category. It originates from Tianzhu (India), as well as Kunlun, Nanfan, and other countries; currently, only those imported by sea route from Guangzhou are available. There is a variety in Guangzhou that resembles trees and vines but is not truly so; another variety in Chuzhou, Guihai, and Haizhou is actually the root of Aristolochia manshuriensis (Dudouling), which is often confused with it in markets, so one must be cautious. The *Sandong Zhu Nang* records: The root resembles dry bones, has a bitter and pungent taste, and the ones that stick to teeth are of high quality. For processing, when used for regulating qi, it should only be used raw and must not be exposed to fire. To solidify the large intestine, it should be wrapped in flour and baked until cooked before use.
Mr. Miu Zhongchun said: It inherits the yang energy of wood and fire, possesses the essence of earth, is clear and developing, and serves as the spirit of moving medicines.
My father said: The upper part embodies the image of wood, thoroughly possessing the dispersing nature of spring.
[Commentary] It is said: Muxiang is an aromatic herb. Named "Wood," it enters the Liver, thus its color, fragrance, aroma, and flavor all possess the function of Jiao-Mu (the Horn-Wood attribute in Five Elements). It also enters the Spleen, thus its roots, branches, nodes, and leaves all possess the numerical characteristics of Gong-Tu (the Palace-Earth attribute in Five Elements). Entering the Spleen eliminates Earth stagnation; entering the Liver unblocks Wood stagnation. The Classics state: When Wood is stagnant, disperse it; when Earth is stagnant, purge it. Purging Earth is precisely to disperse Wood; dispersing Wood is precisely to purge Earth; Earth uses Wood, and Wood is based on Earth. Pathogenic factors, toxic epidemics, warm diseases, demonic influences, strangury, leakage, nightmares, and sleep paralysis, which cause Earth and Wood stagnation, can all be addressed by dispersing and purging. Strengthening willpower means strengthening the functions of Wood and Earth, allowing them to execute their will. (Earth is substantial but functionless, giving rise to grasses and trees as its function. Wood is based on Earth, yet transcends substance and function, speaking of the source of generation.)

[Evidence] It is stated: Found in Jiang, Zhejiang, and Hedong regions. The seedlings and stems are green, about seven or eight cun high. Leaves grow along the stem, resembling leaves of Isatis tinctoria (Songlan). In April, it blooms yellow-purple flowers, or red-white ones. The fruit shell resembles Physalis alkekengi (Suanjiangzi), size like millet grains, round shape, black color. The root is yellow like Shepherd's purse (Jicai). Harvest seedlings in March, pick seeds in May, and roots... [Text cuts off]
My ancestor wrote on this herb: The meaning of its name is also peculiar. Within my body, there is a "King" (Wang), which governs the blood and qi of my body, and governs the retention and flow of blood and qi. If blood and qi are retained, and the "King does not allow staying" (Wang Bu Liu), then the retained parts will move. If blood and qi are flowing, and the "King does not move," then the flowing parts will stay. As for uncontrollable bleeding, and difficult labor with no milk production, both... [Text cuts off]
[Commentary] It is said: Wangbuliuxing is also known as Jinzhen Yintai and Jingonghua. My ancestor annotated the herb, parsing the two characters "Liu Xing" into separate phrases, regarding its therapeutic effects... [Text cuts off]
