[Flavor and Nature] Pungent, greatly warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats accumulated cold qi, stops vomiting, hiccup, and regurgitation, aids digestion of grains, and directs qi downward.
[Commentary on Origin and Morphology] It is said: Produced in the country of Jialuguo (Gujarat?), called "Duogu" (Many Bones). Currently, it is also produced in Guangzhou and Yizhou, but those imported by foreign ships are superior. The plant resembles a banana tree; leaves resemble *Rhinacanthus nasutus* (Duruo), 8-9 chi long, glossy and dense, evergreen. Flowers are pale yellow; fruits grow in clusters resembling grapes, initially light green, turning red and white when ripe. The shell is white and thick; the kernel resembles that of *Amomi Fructus Rotundus* (Suansha Ren). Processing: Remove the shell, stir-fry slightly before use.
[Analysis] It is said: The stomach receives and stores water and grain to undergo fermentation, similar to food becoming soft and tangible in a pot. The reason fermentation occurs relies on the moving qi between the kidneys, known as Pre-heaven Qi. This is akin to the firewood and charcoal burning at the bottom of the pot. Furthermore, it relies on lung respiration, known as Post-heaven Qi. This is like the charcoal at the bottom of the pot, requiring the movement of the body's mechanisms (like bellows) to keep the fire burning vigorously. White is the color of the Lung; whiteness achieves "Xiude" (virtuous function). Bean is the grain of the Kidney, the vessel receiving meat. With a greatly pungent flavor and greatly warm nature, is this not the mechanism of fire igniting and spring water flowing? "Kou" (Cardamom) sounds like "Kou" (Invader/Attack); when the essence fully gathers, one attacks it. Thus, fermented essence becomes Jing-Qi; when fully gathered, the Lung attacks it, transforming and irrigating, meeting the hundred vessels, retaining in the four zang organs, returning to balance, and achieving Xiude. The names of indications can be understood by repeatedly deducing from this principle.
(Three conditions harmoniously combined, substance and function are complete, resembling the character "∴"; missing one makes it incomplete. Wang Wei's poem says: "Three points forming '∴' still have imagination.")

Alternative names state: One name is "Jiajulie", another is "Spleen Family Auspicious Qi".
[Flavor and Nature] Pungent, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily warms the middle, promotes digestion, stops diarrhea, treats accumulated cold, abdominal distension and pain, cholera-like disorder (Huoluan), sudden evil invasion, ghost qi, cold transmission disease, vomiting of foam, cold qi, and infantile milk cholera.
[Commentary on Origin and Morphology] It is said: Nutmeg (Rou Dou Kou), also called Rouguo. Grows in Hu countries, where it is named Jiajulie. China originally did not have it; now people in Lingnan cultivate it. Sprouts in spring, stems shoot up in summer, flowers and bear fruit, all resembling *Amomi Fructus* (Caodoukou), but the skin and flesh kernels differ. The kernels have wrinkles on the outside and patterned veins inside, resembling Areca nut (Binglang), with purple and white intermixed. Processing: Use glutinous rice flour, mix with hot water and knead, wrap the actual kernel, roast in chaff ash fire until cooked; remove flour before use. Do not contact iron vessels.
[Analysis] It is said: Musical tone is called "Rou" (Flesh). *Book of Rites* states: "The sound of broadness and fullness." Fang Shi says: "Outside the jade disc is called Rou, inside is called Hao." Fu Shi says: "Rouhao means perfect and beautiful, musical sound is plump." Vessel for meat is called "Dou". *Classic of Poetry* states: "In the Dou and Deng, Dou offers pickled vegetables and meat paste, Deng holds large soup." Fullness of things is called "Kou". *Shuowen Jiezi* states: "From Zhi and Wan, when it is fully gathered, one Kous it." Generally, the organ presenting grains to the Deng is the Stomach; its receiving aspect is Substance (Ti), its transporting aspect is Function (Yong). If there is Substance without Function, grain food will not digest, leading to abdominal distension and pain, Huoluan, loose stools, vomiting of foam, and infantile milk issues. These are caused by cold accumulation in the middle, and invasion of evil ghost qi. Nutmeg possesses strong and pungent flavors, stirring the central yellow qi, attacking them to expel them. This is所谓的 opening the Upper Jiao, disseminating the flavors of five grains for nourishment, and disseminating the flavors of five animals for sufficiency. Sufficiency leads to plump muscles and beauty; nourishment leads to moist skin and elegance. Hence named Nutmeg for this reason.
(Receiving is Substance, transporting is Function. Having Substance without Function leads to receiving but not transporting, such as Middle Xiao or hole-like diarrhea, which can be deduced by analogy.)
