[Shangpin Category of the Classic of Materia Medica]
Examine the shape and distinguish the origin. This is not only because it possesses the entirety of the mountain's characteristics, but also relies on external conditions for mutual support. Because it possesses the entirety of the mountain's characteristics, its medicinal power is so brave and fierce.
[Flavor and Property] Sweet, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Mainly treats cough with rebellious Qi (Ke Ni Shang Qi), brightens the eyes, benefits essence (Jing), calms the five Zang organs (Wu Zang), unblocks all joints (Bai Jie), facilitates the nine orifices (Jiu Qiao), and promotes lactation.
[Verification] Says: It grows in the valleys of Mount Shaoshi and Mount Tai. The best quality comes from Shixing; it is also found in the stone caves of famous mountains in Jiangling and the eastern regions. According to Fan Chengda's "Guanghai Zhi", the description is very detailed. It states that in the mountain caves and stone holes connecting Guilin, Yizhou, and Rongzhou, there are many Zhongru (Stalactite). Looking up at where the stone veins surge, there are "milk beds" (Ruchuang), white as jade and snow, formed by the melting and condensation of stone fluid. The milk bed hangs down like an inverted mountain peak, with the tip gradually becoming sharp and long, resembling an icicle. The tip of the icicle is thin and light, hollow like a goose feather quill. Milk drops continuously, condensing as they drip; this is the most refined Zhongru, collected by holding bamboo tubes upward to catch them. Those who refine medicines consider the end of the "goose tube" type, which is especially light and clear like mica fingernails, to be superior. Sun Simiao said: Zhongru must come from land that is clean and pure, lustrous and moist like brocade patterns, bird feathers, or cicada wings, and entirely white ones can be used; those not from such land should never be taken, as they kill more swiftly than poison. Another edition notes: Any Zhongru growing in deep caves and secluded holes is a place where dragons and snakes lurk; some may absorb dragon/snake toxic vapors, some have uneven Yin and Yang at the cave mouth, some are affected by wind currents, or appear yellow/red without luster, or were improperly calcined with inconsistent fire, or not changed water after one boiling; taking these causes Lin syndrome (strangury). Furthermore, there are three types of Zhongru: One is Stone Ru (Shi Ru), where the cave is pure stone, stone juices nourish each other, Yin and Yang are complete, and those with cicada-wing patterns tend to be warm in nature; One is Bamboo Ru (Zhu Ru), where small bamboos grow throughout the cave, bamboo juices mix with stone, the stone resembles bamboo, and tends to be neutral in nature; One is Thatch Ru (Mao Ru), produced in Maoshan, where the mountain has mixed soil and stone with abundant thatch grass, thatch juices nourish each other, the form and texture are smooth and lubricating, and tends to be cold in nature. All are best when lustrous. Others exist elsewhere, do not trust them lightly. Lei Gong said: When using Zhongru, do not use those with thick heads or large tails, as these are Konggong Shi (Hole Public Stone), which are useless. Do not use those that are black, exposed to intense fire, stored underground for a long time, or previously processed with drugs. They must be fresh, bright, thin, light, and lustrous, resembling goose feather quills, which are excellent. Processing method: Take 8 liang of Zhongru, boil with 1 liang each of Chenxiang (Aquilaria Wood), Linglingxiang (Lingnan Agastache), Huoxiang (Patchouli), Gansong (Nardostachys), and Baimao (Imperata Rhizome) in water. Boil again to extract juice, then use this juice to boil the Zhongru for one shichen (2 hours), remove and drain. Then boil with 1 liang each of Gancao (Licorice Root) and Zi Bei Tian Kui (Oxalis corymbosa) together, remove, wipe dry, and slow-roast. Pound into powder in a mortar, sieve, and put into a bowl. Have two or three strong young men grind continuously for three days and nights. Then clarify by water levigation, cover with silk gauze, dry in the sun, pound again in a bowl for 30,000 times, and store in a porcelain box. Taqing Jing method for refining Zhongru: Take fine powder, place in gold or silver vessel, cover tightly with a tile to prevent gas leakage, steam it until it naturally turns into water. Xu Zhicai said: Shechuangzi (Cnidium Fruit) acts as an assistant drug. It is incompatible with Mudan (Tree Peony Root Bark), Xuan Shi (Black Stone), and Mumeng (Dioscorea Polystachya). It fears Zhiyanshi (Purple Quartz) and [missing character] Cao. Avoid mutton. Li Shizhen said: It also conflicts with Renshen (Ginseng) and Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala); violating this often leads to death. Tusuxen Jun said: Zhongru is produced inside Yang caves, condensed from Yang Qi; taking it can soften the five metals. Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber), garlic, leek seeds, Hucong (Allium hookeri), Huyi (Coriander), and Mao'er Yan (Aconitum carmichaelii side root) can all be taken with it.
(The Classic says: Water power is inferior to Fire, condensing to form high mountains. Zhongru inherently possesses both Water and Fire elements. Since the substance of the ru resembles water, yet its brave/fierce nature is exclusive, does this not indicate Fire overcoming Water? In processing, boiling with water still involves the interaction of Water and Fire to balance it. However, boiling makes Water superior to Fire, thus slightly moderating its fierce nature. Nowadays, people mostly use calcination/fire, which instead enhances its fierceness, leading to frequent hazards of stone toxicity and burning sensations.)
My late father said: When the five Zang organs are harmonious and orifices/joints are unblocked, one achieves a terrestrial paradise. This belongs to borrowing external aid; one must carefully preserve and nurture it. Only through long-term habituation can it become natural.
[Analysis] Says: Ru is the spiritual fluid of stone, possessing the entirety of the mountain's characteristics. However, since mountain bodies vary in purity and turbidity, the quality of Ru varies accordingly. Just as women differ in constitution, so too do the thickness of Zhongru, the sweetness or blandness of taste, and the fishy/fragrant, cold/warm nature of its Qi; whether it nourishes infants effectively also has its distinctions. Therefore, Zhongru must first be evaluated by origin, then by shape, to ensure acquisition of the good. Only the Qi of Heaven and Earth, concentrated in famous mountains, condenses into Ru. Observing its indications, one can deduce them one by one: For instance, if the lung system is blocked and distended, it cannot distribute Qi, causing cough and rebellious Qi. Zhongru is hollow and void, resembling the lung system; how could it suffer from blockage and distension? It is concentrated stone fluid, lustrous and transparent, thus brightening the eyes. The eyes are also concentrated water fluid, seeing clearly in light and dark. This is the marrow/essence of the stone, inexhaustible drop by drop, thus benefiting the body of essence. This is the fluid of Gen Mountain (Mountain Trigram), able to benefit True Yin. However, the five Zang organs belong to Extreme Yin, requiring tranquility and moisture to be harmonious. If it unblocks all joints, facilitates the nine orifices, and lowers...
