[Shennong Bencao Jing, Middle Category]
【Flavor and Nature】Sweet, warm, non-toxic.
【Indications】Primarily treats sudden fright, epilepsy (Jingxian), manic psychosis (Dianji), Guizhu (a chronic wasting disease caused by evil qi), and Gu poison (poison from insects or parasites). It eliminates alternating chills and fever, Bentun (a condition where Qi rushes upward from the lower abdomen to the chest), Wulong (five types of urinary retention), evil qi, and muscle spasms/contractions.
【Analysis】It is stated: "Tuanluan" refers to the testicles of a male pig. Piglets often have their testicles removed, hence the name "Tuanluan." They should be dried in the shade and stored, ensuring they do not spoil.
【Commentary】It is said: "Tun" refers to a piglet. "Shi" is the general term for pigs. The Commentary on the Appended Lines of the I Ching states that the Kan trigram symbolizes the pig; its nature tends downward, so it lowers its head and prefers low, dirty, and damp places. When rain is about to fall, pigs wade through water, which is a sign of their agitation. As pigs advance into the waves, white pigs are particularly agitated and proactive, thus entering the water first. Therefore, pure black pigs are those among pigs that are less tamed. The Shuowen Jiezi states: In the twelve Earthly Branches, Hai corresponds to the pig, so the character Hai resembles the shape of a pig. Since one Yin qi arises at Wu month, and by Hai month, six Yin qualities are complete, people worry it appears devoid of Yang. Thus, the character Shi follows the radical Shi in objects, and follows the branch Hai in Qi. Its correspondence to Water is because it can expand its own kind. A female pig is called "Pin" or "Zhi." The Book of Songs says: "One shot yields five piglets." A male pig is called "Qi" or "Fen." The Book of Songs says "One shot yields five piglets," and the Book of Rites mentions sacrificing with a black pig. Therefore, "Tuanluan" refers to the testicles within the scrotum of a piglet. Removing the testicles from piglets results in better external meat quality and internal flavor; otherwise, it leads to disorder and indulgence in mating. This is the reason for the alternative name "Tundian." The world discards this substance, mistakenly referring to the offspring of a pig (piglet), the bladder sac, the kidneys (loin meat), and the penis as "Tuanluan," which is erroneous. The location of the testicles is the genital organ, the convergence point of the Jueyin Meridian, reaching down to the lower abdomen and connecting up to the root of the tongue, which is precisely the palace position of Kidney Water. If Kidney Qi becomes agitated, it flows upward, assisting the Jueyin reversal to rush against the Heart. This disease is named Bentun. Bentun is an accumulation in the Kidney and a rebellion of the Liver. In severe cases, excessive Yin leads to Dian (manic psychosis), fluctuating Yin leads to Xian (epilepsy), and Yin-Yang reversal leads to alternating chills and fever. Alternatively, if the Kidney fails to control the Yin orifice, or the Liver fails to drain the anterior Yin, it results in Wulong (urinary retention). Or, losing the ability to moisten the Zongjin (major sinews) leads to spasms, and losing the ability to benefit the joints leads to contraction. All these belong to disorders originating in the Kidney and Liver before affecting other organs. Among those that have not completely separated from their original category to assist in treatment, only Tuanluan serves this purpose.
