Purgative, blood-breaking.
Acrid and cold in nature. Corrodes foul flesh, discharges pus and blood, kills scabies mites, eliminates heat-bi (painful obstruction due to heat), and breaks up masses and accumulations. (*Suwen* records that when used with black bone chicken, it treats female blood-kw deficiency.)
The root resembles radish. The skin is yellow, the flesh is white. The leaves are long and slightly broad; when broken, they exude juice. The fruit is bean-like, containing three seeds per pod. Licorice Root is used as a guiding herb.
Also known as Di Song (Ground Pine), Huo Lu Cao (Living Deer Grass), or Xia Ma Lan (Toad Blue). It purges heat, induces vomiting of phlegm, breaks blood, and resolves toxicity.
Acrid, sweet, and cold in nature; capable of breaking blood. (A postpartum woman presented with thirst, panting, red face with macules, diarrhea, and urinary retention. After blood-invigorating and diuretic herbs failed, she was treated with a concentrated decoction paste of Tian Ming Jing roots and leaves. She passed one bucket of clotted blood, her urination resumed, and she recovered.) It can also stop bleeding. By inducing vomiting of phlegm, clearing heat, and resolving toxicity while killing parasites, it treats Ru E Hou Bi (tonsillitis and throat bi-syndrome), Sha Lin (gravel strangury) and Xue Lin (blood strangury). (*Su Shen Liang Fang* states: concentrated decoction with a little Frankincense and Musk yields miraculous effects.) It treats infant lockjaw, acute and chronic convulsive disorders. (For those unconscious, fresh juice mixed with good wine is administered orally to restore consciousness; the dregs mixed with vinegar are applied to the neck.) Drinking the juice induces vomiting of malaria phlegm. (When treating throat bi and convulsions, its use relies on this phlegm-expelling property.) Gargling with the juice stops toothache. Crushed and applied externally, it treats snake and insect bites. The root is named Du Niu Xi (False Achyranthes), with identical functions, white in color like short Achyranthes Root. (Decoction for washing hemorrhoids; dregs inserted into the affected area are beneficial.) Rehmannia Root is used as a guiding herb. (For hematemesis in men and women, dry Di Song powder is taken with two qian, mixed with Thatch Flower water, which is effective.)
He Shi (Hedgehog Apple Fruit) (Purgative, antiparasitic.)
Bitter and acrid. Kills five-viscera parasites and treats abdominal pain caused by roundworms. (Pale face, red lips, intermittent pain indicates worm-pain; take powder mixed with fatty meat juice.) This is the seed of Tian Ming Jing. It adheres strongly to clothing and has a fox-like odor; it becomes fragrant when stir-fried. (*Guai Ji Qi Fang* records: persistent expulsion of large intestine worms that regenerate after cutting, causing restlessness; taking half liang of He Shi powder mixed with water leads to self-healing.)
Purges heat and resolves toxicity.
Sweet, slightly acrid, and cold in nature. Its function specializes in clearing heat and dissipating nodules. Treats carbuncles, sores, furuncles, and scrofula. (Apply with vinegar grinding.) Resolves various toxins, including gu poison, snake/insect bites, and rabies injuries. The root resembles Colocasia corm or small garlic; remove the hairy shell. (Those wrapped in a hairy shell are authentic, hence commonly called Mao Gu today.)
