Tonifies deficiency and kills parasites.
Sweet and neutral in nature. Disperses wind and kills parasites. (Parasites arise from wind; hence the character for "wind" contains the component for "insect".) Treats bone-steaming consumption (a chronic consumptive disease characterized by steaming bone fever and emaciation), damp-bi (joint pain and heaviness due to dampness obstruction), wind-pruritus (skin itching like insects crawling), and erosion with itching of the vaginal orifice. Tonifies deficiency and damage.
Its bones, when burned to smoke, turn mosquitoes into water. Fumigating bamboo and wood repels woodworms. Placing them in clothing chests repels various booklice and moths. The sea eel has the same efficacy. Its blood, if a sore rash enters the eye, can be applied sparingly as eye drops.
Xuan (referring to Eel): Disperses wind.
Sweet and greatly warm. Tonifies the five zang organs. Eliminates wind-dampness. The blood from its tail treats facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes). (Mix with a small amount of Moschus. Apply to the right side if the face deviates to the left, and to the left side if it deviates to the right. Wash off immediately once alignment is restored.) Drip into the ear to treat otalgia. Drip into the nose to treat epistaxis. Apply to the eye to treat corneal opacity after smallpox. (Li Shizhen said: Eels are good at burrowing, sharing the nature of snakes; thus they can travel through meridians and collaterals, treating wind pathogens and diseases of the orifices. When wind strikes the blood vessels, blood is used as the primary treatment, following the principle of similarity.) The head treats insects entering the ear. (Burn to ash, grind into powder, wrap in cotton, and insert into the ear.)
Common name: Loach. Regulates the middle jiao and tonifies qi.
Sweet and neutral. Warms the middle and tonifies qi. Resolves alcohol intoxication. Relieves polydipsia. Cooked with rice flour as a soup. Regulates the middle and retracts prolapsed hemorrhoids. Boiled and eaten to treat impotence.
Also known as Cuttlefish Bone. Xuan: Unblocks blood vessels and dispels cold-dampness.
Salty flavor enters the blood aspect. Gently warms and harmonizes the blood. Enters the blood aspect of the Liver and Kidney. Unblocks blood vessels. Dispels cold-dampness. Treats blood exhaustion (blood deficiency and depletion). (The *Neijing* states: Blood exhaustion is treated with cuttlefish bone.) Stops hematemesis and epistaxis. Intestinal wind and metrorrhagia/metrostaxis. Astringes chronic deficiency diarrhea and dysentery. Abdominal pain encircling the umbilicus. Genital erosion with swelling and pain. (Burn to ash, take with wine.) Malaria and malnutrition parasites. Corneal opacity with tearing. Otorrhea. (The property can dry dampness, discharge pus, and absorb fluid. Grind into fine powder, add a little Moschus, and sprinkle into the affected area.) Diseases of the Jueyin and Shaoyin (Liver, Kidney) meridians. The meat is sour and neutral. Tonifies qi. Strengthens willpower and benefits people. Unblocks menstruation. Sourced from the East Sea. Also called Ink Fish. (Contains ink in the abdomen; writing made with it fades after a year. Often spits black water to cover itself. Catchers capture it where the water turns black.) Obtain the bone. Soaked in fish brine. Roasted until yellow. Adverse with Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, Bletillae Rhizoma, and Ampelopsis Radix. Can reduce saltiness. (Tongue swelling with bleeding like a spring: equal parts of Pori Colla, ground into fine powder, applied topically. For broken skin with bleeding: apply cuttlefish bone powder.)
