Yinbian
Bianshi (Stone needles) is mainly used for puncturing to treat various diseases and carbuncles and sores (Compendium of Materia Medica), capable of unblocking the blood vessels and regulating qi stagnation. It was used in ancient times (Pinhui Xuji). [Name] Zhen shi (Needle stone). [Origin] The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Dongshan Jing) records: Gaoshi Mountain and Fuli Mountain both abound in iron stones. [Usage] Guo Pu's commentary states: Iron stones can be made into bianshen (stone needles). [Texture] Wang Bing's commentary states: Bianshi resembles jade; it seems that in ancient times, stones were used as needles, while later generations replaced stones with metal needles. Nowadays, people use porcelain needles to treat illnesses, which is also a remnant idea of bianshi. [Indications] Suwen: Yifang Fangyi Lun states: The eastern region is an area of fish and salt, adjacent to the sea and waterways. The people there are prone to sores and ulcers, and the appropriate treatment is bianshi. Therefore, bianshi also originates from the east. However, no one in the world recognizes it now; could it be made of such stones? Thus, it is appended after the Stone category. (Compendium of Materia Medica Appendix) ○ Li Shizhen says: Shi zu (Stone arrowheads) come from the Sushen people, who used dead wood for arrows and green stone for arrowheads. If poison is applied, death ensues upon being struck. These stones grow in mountains. The Yu Gong (Tribute of Yu) records that tribute from Jingzhou and Liangzhou included these arrowheads. Additionally, in Tengzhou in the south, green stone is used to make swords and knives, similar to copper and iron; women use them as rings; the people of Liuli use stones as knives for farming, over a chi long. All these are of this type.
Shao Shang Sha
Mainly treats facial wind millet (small bumps on the face), which may be blue, yellow, or red, presenting with dull, dark, astringent pain, as well as sores on the lips. Scraping one or two grains from the user's own rice-washing spoon brings immediate relief (Compendium of Materia Medica). [Name] Li Shizhen says: This comes from rice-washing spoons; wooden spoons and ladles can all be used. [Indications] Li Shizhen's prescription: For treating "chui ru" (acute mastitis) in women, take seven grains of spoon sand.
Non-toxic
Shibie
Mainly treats lin disease (dysuria) and blood disorders; taken as ground water (Compendium of Materia Medica). [Origin] Li Shizhen says: Shibie grows by the seaside. [Texture] Its shape and size resemble KT insects completely, covered...
Leimo
Mainly treats pediatric convulsions, epilepsy, and evil influences. Grinding it with Tao Fu Tang (Peach Talisman Decoction) and taking it brings immediate peace (Compendium of Materia Medica). [Name] Liu Xun's Lingbiao Lu Yi states: After heavy rains in Leizhou, people find stones in the fields resembling rocks, called Leigong Mo (Thunder God Ink). When knocked, they sound clear and bright, and are lovely and lustrous. [Origin] Lei Shu states: In Leizhou, during thunderstorms, things fly down like sand and stones, black, glossy, beautiful, and heavy. [Texture] Large ones are like blocks, small ones like fingers, hard as stone. Li Zhao's Guo Shi Bu states: Leizhou has many thunders; in autumn, they lie dormant, shaped like humans, and can be dug up and eaten. From this, we see that thunder indeed produces physical objects. [Color] Li Shizhen says: According to Lei Shu, "Lei Shu Mu Shi" refers to wooden slips inserted two or three fen deep, appearing yellow-green; or it is said to be composed of Realgar, Indigo Naturalis, and Cinnabar, written upon with Thunder Wedges; or it is said to be written with stone grease from Penglai Mountain. Tangping Nei Jian
Mainly stops xiaoke (wasting-thirst syndrome). Take one liang, grind into powder, mix with rice porridge pills sized like wutong seeds. Take twenty pills each time, washed down with Ginseng Decoction (Compendium of Materia Medica). [Origin] Li Shizhen says: This is the sediment formed from clarifying the water inside boiling pots, resembling fine sand. [Indications] Li Shizhen's prescription: For pediatric mouth sores, mix the powder with vinegar at bedtime and draw a cross on both soles of the feet; effective. [Combined Treatment] Shengji Lu states: For wasting-thirst with excessive thirst, equal parts of Tangping Nei Jian, Radix Puerariae, and dried Spirodela are decocted in water, five qian per dose. Another prescription: One liang each of Tangping Nei Jian and fried Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae, plus two liang of dried Wu Mei (Fructus Mume) with seeds, ground into powder. Take two qian per dose, decocted in one zhan of water in a stoneware vessel until reduced to 70%, taken warm once daily.
