Niu Pi Jiao (Cowhide Gelatin)
Tonifies deficiency.
Sweet and neutral in nature. Its efficacy is similar to Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) and can be used as a substitute. (Li Shizhen stated: Genuine Ejiao is hard to obtain, so Niu Pi Jiao can be used temporarily. Their properties and flavors are both mild tonics, suitable for individuals with deficiency-heat. Zhang Zhongjing treated dysentery by combining Ejiao with Huang Ming Jiao (Yellow Transparent Gelatin) and Huang La (Yellow Beeswax). Chen Cangqi said: All gelatins can treat wind disorders, tonify deficiency, and stop diarrhea; Donkey-hide gelatin is best for treating wind. The "Experience Formulas" record: For early-stage carbuncles and ulcers, consume four taels of Huang Ming Jiao dissolved in wine at once; after finishing the dose, the pathogenic toxin will not penetrate inward. The "Tang Family Formulas" record: Add four slices of Chuan Shan Jia (Pangolin Scales), calcined until carbonized but retaining its essence. I opine: If this formula proves effective, it surpasses taking La Fan Wan (Beeswax and Alum Pill)).
Promotes circulation, dispels wind, strengthens bones.
Pungent and slightly warm. Tiger belongs to Metal and controls Wood, hence roaring generates wind. It pursues wind, strengthens bones, alleviates pain, and expels evil pathogens. Treats wind-bi syndrome with spasms, pain, palpitations, epilepsy, dog bites, and bone obstructions in the throat (grind into powder, take with water; for dog bites, apply topically to the affected area). The skull and tibia are considered superior (Even after death, a tiger stands without falling, as its strength resides in the front tibiae. Li Shizhen noted: To expel evil influences and zhu diseases, and to treat epilepsy, plague malaria, and headache due to wind, use the skull. To treat wind affecting hands and feet, use the tibia. To treat wind affecting the waist and spine, use the spinal bone; each part corresponds to its respective category).
Hu Du (Tiger Stomach) treats regurgitation (Take fresh stomach, retain impurities without washing, seal in a new tile, calcine until carbonized, and grind into powder. Mix with one liang of Ping Wei San, take three qian per dose; effective. My note: Hu Du Wan is suitable for Shi Ge (Food Obstruction); however, for Han Ge (Cold Obstruction), Qi Ge (Qi Obstruction), Xue Ge (Blood Obstruction), or Tan Ge (Phlegm Obstruction), it may likely fail to show results).
Hu Jing (Tiger Eye) ground into powder, taken with Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap), treats pediatric epilepsy and night crying.
Clears intense heat from Heart and Stomach.
Bitter, sour, salty, and cold. Cools the Heart, drains Liver, clears intense heat in the Stomach, dispels wind, benefits phlegm, expels evil pathogens, and detoxifies. Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) and seasonal epidemics causing jaundice and macules (If purgatives are used too early in Shanghan, heat enters the Stomach through deficiency causing macules; if used too late, heat remains in the Stomach also causing macules), hematemesis, hematochezia, blood stasis with delirium and mania, blackened and depressed acne/variola, resolves abscesses and promotes pus discharge, calms fright, and brightens eyes. Contraindicated in pregnancy (It can dissipate fetal qi. Li Shizhen said: The five zang and six fu organs all receive qi from the Stomach. Wind pathogens and heat toxins must first affect the Stomach; food and drugs also enter the Stomach first. Horn is the concentration of the rhinoceros's essence and acts on the Foot Yangming Stomach channel. Thus, it enters the Yangming channel, resolves all toxins, treats all blood disorders, and conditions such as fright, mania, macules, and variola. "Baopuzi" states: Rhinoceros eats toxic herbs and thorns, thus it can detoxify. If food is poisoned, stirring with horn produces white foam). Those that are black and lustrous are superior, especially the horn tip (Deer antlers and rhino horn tips contain the concentrated essence). Ready-made artifacts are often boiled or steamed and are unsuitable for medicinal use. For decoctions, grind to extract juice; for pills and powders, finely chop. Wrap in paper and keep in the bosom; body heat will make it brittle enough to crush easily ("Guitian Lu" notes: Human breath softens powdered rhino horn). Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) serves as a guiding herb. Avoid salt.
