Sangshang Jisheng (Mistletoe on Mulberry Branch) has a bitter taste and neutral nature. It primarily treats generalized wind-induced pruritus and dryness of the skin, edema (Shuiqi), podagra or foot qi (Xiangjiaoogen), wind-pathogen invasion, spasmodic contracture of the four limbs, rebellious Qi rising, dizziness (Yun), cough due to Lung Qi rebellion, aids digestion, and promotes urination. Long-term consumption lightens the body, sharpens hearing and vision, and imparts a lustrous complexion. (Attached from *Tujing Bencao* / Illustrated Classic of Materia Medica.)
It stops Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst syndrome, akin to diabetes), (from *Tang Bencao* / Tang Materia Medica) benefits the Five Viscera, relieves joint pain, calms the Hun (Ethereal Soul), stabilizes the Shen (Spirit), enhances mental acuity, whitens hair, and prevents aging. (Attached from *Bencao Shiyi* / Supplement to Materia Medica.)
Another description notes a bitter and warm flavor, non-toxic. It primarily strengthens the Spleen, astringes the Intestines, stops epistaxis (Bi Hong), hematemesis (Tu Xue), intestinal wind bleeding (Chang Feng), metrorrhagia (Beng Zhong), and leukorrhea (Dai Xia). (Attached from *Rihua Bencao* / Daily Flora Materia Medica.)
(Note: The text clarifies that some confusion exists with "Sanghua Bai Xian" / White moss on mulberry flowers, which is scraped and fried, distinct from Sang Shen Hua / Mulberry fruit flower.)
The authentic Sangshang Jisheng (Mulberry Mistletoe) has a bitter taste and neutral nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats lower back pain, stiffness of the back and carbuncles/swellings in children, nourishes the skin and muscles, strengthens teeth and hair, promotes growth of beard and eyebrows, and calms the fetus.
(Sangshang Jisheng originally comes from valleys in Hongnong and coastal regions overseas, where the climate is warm and sericulture is not practiced. Because the mulberry trees suffer no pruning or felling, their Qi is dense and potent. Thus, small woody plants grow among the branches and nodes; this is Sangshang Jisheng. Its leaves are like those of the orange tree, thick and soft. Its stems are like those of the locust tree, plump and brittle. In April, it blooms with yellow-white flowers; in May, it bears yellow-red fruits, size of small beans, with thick, sticky juice. Stems broken to reveal deep yellow interior are considered superior. Parasites exist on maple, oak, beech, willow, and poplar trees. However, only those growing on mulberry trees are usable. Commonly, parasites from other trees are used as substitutes; unaware of the difference in Qi and properties, such use is not only ineffective but harmful. Some yellow parasites resemble Dendrobium Shi Hu; others look like firewood and are not yellow; these are all fake.)
Sangshang Jisheng absorbs the essence of the mulberry and grows among its branches without seasonal restriction, independent of soil power, seemingly seizing the miraculous work of Heaven and Earth. It treats lower back pain because the waist is the external manifestation of the Kidney. Men store Essence (Jing) through it, and women anchor the Chong and Ren vessels/fetus through it. By absorbing the refined Qi of the mulberry and growing by attachment, it treats lower back pain. Children’s Kidneys are not fully formed, so they may not present with lower back pain, but might suffer from back stiffness and swellings. Since Sangshang Jisheng treats lower back pain, it can also treat these conditions in children. It nourishes the skin and muscles because Jing-Qi reaches outward. It strengthens teeth and hair because Jing-Qi is sufficient inward. When Jing-Qi reaches outward to nourish the skin, beard and eyebrows grow. When Jing-Qi is sufficient inward to strengthen teeth, the fetus remains secure. Generally, skin and muscles are the "remnants" of flesh; teeth are the "remnants" of bone; hair, beard, and eyebrows are the "remnants" of blood; the fetus is the "remnant" of the body. Using a substance that grows by "remnant Qi" (parasitic energy) to treat diseases of the "remnant" tissues (skin, hair, bones, fetus) follows the principle of resonance between similar entities.
