Also known as Yinan Cao (Daylily). Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart meridian.
It is excellent at promoting urination and relieving chest fullness, bringing joy and forgetting worries. Jinzhen Cai (Hemerocallis citrina) has similar main uses.
Xuan (Daylily) was anciently written as Xuan. The Book of Songs states: "How can I obtain the Xuan grass?" This refers to this kind of plant. Xuan means forget; one wishes to plant it to forget worries.
Xuan Ye (Daylily leaves): Can induce peaceful sleep. Boiling three stems in water and drinking it is effective. Using Jinzhen Cai leaves instead also yields the same effect and can be used continuously.
Also called Yehe (Albizia julibrissin / Mimosa tree). Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart and Spleen meridians.
Calms and harmonizes the Five Viscera, bringing joy and forgetting worries.
The Heart is the sovereign official; Earth (Spleen/Stomach) is the mother of all things. When these two viscera are harmonized, the Five Viscera naturally settle, and the Spirit flows freely.
Eliminating anger precisely refers to this mechanism.
Slightly pungent, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart and Spleen meridians.
Elm brings joy and induces sleep. It assists the Lungs, strengthens the Spleen, resolves food stagnation, and directs Qi downward. Made into a soup with beef, it treats leukorrhea in weak women. Seeds are harvested to make sauce.
Yu Ye (Elm leaves): Tender leaves made into soup or fried food promote urination and reduce edema. Zao Ren (Ziziphus jujuba seed) mixed with honey in equal parts and formed into pills treats insomnia due to Gallbladder heat and deficiency exhaustion. Decoction of Elm leaves washed on the nose affected by alcoholism is effective.
Yu Bai Pi (Elm bark): Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, slippery and lubricating, non-toxic. In times of famine, it substitutes for grain, temporarily alleviating hunger. For edema caused by starvation, it must be mixed with bran. It benefits orifices, leaches out dampness, dispels pathogenic factors, and harmonizes the Spleen. Slippery substances remove adherence, making it very suitable for unblocking bowels.
(See Dietary Therapy)
Bitter, pungent, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Heart and Kidney meridians. Averse to Zhenzhu (Pearl) and Lilu (Veratrum nigrum).
Detoxifies Fuzi (Aconite) toxicity: Soak in cold Licorice decoction until saturated, drain water, and dry by roasting.
Stabilizes Heart Qi, stops palpitations/fright, enhances intelligence, tonifies Kidney Qi, strengthens will, and benefits essence. Treats heat in the skin, making ears and eyes clear. Treats rebellious Qi (cough/asthma) without further damaging the Middle Jiao, and fortifies deficiency to eliminate pathogenic factors.
When the Heart master is calm and stable, there is no fear of shock, and spiritual mechanisms operate well, thus stopping fright and enhancing intelligence. When the Water organ (Kidney) is full, it functions strongly and competently. By closing hibernation and sealing storage, it strengthens will and benefits essence. When Water is abundant, skin heat can be eliminated; when the Heart is at peace, ears and eyes become clear.
Yuanzhi (Polygala root) tonifies both Water and Fire, leading to the interaction of Kan and Li, achieving the state of Ji Ji (Already Completed/Harmony)? Its external applications are good for treating carbuncles and toxins; both topical application and oral administration are miraculous. This is due to the power of bitterness to drain and pungency to disperse.
