It can search out pus and draw out toxins, remove necrotic tissue and generate new flesh. For chronic non-healing sores and ulcers, external application can resolve stagnation.
This medicine is produced by sublimation of mercury and other substances. It is toxic and cannot be taken internally. When used externally, it is combined with Frankincense (Ruxiang) and Myrrh (Moyao) to form a powder named Sanxiang San (Three Fragrances Powder). Sprinkled onto plasters and applied to the wound, it resolves necrosis and extracts toxins, yielding rapid results.

Bitter in taste, neutral in nature, toxic. Grind into fine powder and process by water levigation.
Applied topically for snake and scorpion bites, yaws (yangmei ding), tinea, hemorrhoids, and sores, following the method yields significant power. It resolves accumulation of phlegm-saliva, blood stasis, wind pathogens invading the body, and evil qi affecting corpse-guest diseases; administering according to prescription yields remarkable efficacy.
It enters exclusively the Jueyin channel and serves as a detoxifying herb for various sores and ulcers. Combined with Croton Seed (Badou) and Turmeric Tuber (Yujin), vinegar-pilled, it is named Xionghuang Jiedu Wan (Realgar Detoxification Pill). It has good effects for treating acute sore throat obstruction (houbi) and is an emergency rescue medicine.

(Alum/Bai Fan)
Sour and astringent in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians. Licorice Root (Gancao) acts as the guiding herb. It is incompatible with Oyster Shell (Muli) and Ephedra Herb (Mahuang).
External use: Astringes prolapsed rectum and uterine prolusion (yinting), treats tinea and dampness invasion. Internal use: Eliminates phlegm, stops diarrhea, clears heat, and dispels wind.
The uses of Alum are fourfold: For various cases of blood loss leading to prolapsed rectum, uterine prolusion, and sores, its sour and astringent properties are utilized for astringency; for sore throat obstruction, carbuncles, snake bites, and insect poison, its detoxifying property is utilized; for vomiting wind-heat phlegm-saliva, its sour and bitter properties are utilized for inducing emesis; for treating wind-phlegm, dysentery, metrorrhagia, and leukorrhea, its astringing and drying-dampness properties are utilized. Excessive intake damages bones and harms the heart and lungs.

(Sulfur/Liu Huang)
Sour in taste, extremely hot in nature, toxic. Enters the Heart and Kidney meridians. It fears Asarum (Xixin), Mirabilite (Piaoxiao), iron, and vinegar. Preparation involves hollowing out a radish (Laifu), placing sulfur inside to fix it, roasting it with bran fire, boiling it together with Purple-backed Duckweed (Zibei Fuping), and washing away the black slurry with Sophora Flower (Zaojiao) decoction.
External use: Kills parasites and dries cold-dampness. Sweeps away all tinea. Internal use: Strengthens yang, consolidates sinews and bones, eliminates yin pathogenic factors. For elderly constipation due to wind, Pinellia Tuber (Banxia) is used as the sovereign herb to establish unblocking methods.
For dysentery and diarrhea due to deficiency-cold, it is assisted by Wax-Alum pills to stop rapidly; one spoonful administered with Mugwort (Aiyi) decoction brings spring back to yin-toxin. Three pills sent down with warm wine reconstructs extreme cold.
Endowed with the essence of pure yang, it can supplement the Minister Fire, rescue critical conditions, darken hair and beard, and prolong life. However, it must be processed properly. Only those who abstain from sexual intercourse may use it. If used improperly, the disaster will be severe, hence it is rarely used. External treatment for tinea yields very rapid results. However, simultaneously, diuretic and detoxifying agents must be taken to prevent the toxin from attacking inward and causing difficult-to-treat edema.
