Pungent and bitter in flavor, cold in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Lung (Fei), Heart (Xin), Pericardium (Xinbao), Liver (Gan), and Stomach (Wei) meridians.
Resolves stagnation and promotes Qi movement, alleviates pain and invigorates blood. Cools the Heart and unblocks the Lungs, expands the chest and relaxes the hypochondrium. Combined with Mingfan (Alumen), it resolves phlegm and saliva, clearing the obscuration of the Spirit (Shen). Paired with Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma), it treats Houbi (throat obstruction/bi-syndrome), dispersing the knotting of Yin and Yang.
It can open the stagnation of Metal (Lung), hence its name Yujin (Curcuma Aromatica Rhizoma). Danxi further stated: "The ancients used it to treat conditions where Qi was suppressed and unable to ascend; perhaps this is the origin of its name."
Yujin is fundamentally a Qi-moving herb entering the Blood level. Its efficacy can be distinguished by origin. Those produced in Guangdong are yellow in color, excel at moving Qi and benefit the Lungs. Those produced in Sichuan are purple in color, enter the Ying (Nutritive) level, and are superior at invigorating blood.
Bitter and pungent in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Spleen (Pi) and Liver (Gan) meridians. Breaks blood stasis and directs Qi downward, dissipates swelling and reduces abscesses.
Pungent disperses and bitter drains, thus specializing in breaking blood stasis, while directing Qi downward is a secondary effect. This herb can promote circulation of Qi within the blood, ensuring that when Qi moves, blood does not become stagnant. There is another variety called Pianzi Jianghuang (Curcumae Longae Rhizoma slices), which is effective for stopping arm pain.
Those with Blood deficiency should not take it.
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Lung (Fei) and Liver (Gan) meridians. Stir-fried with wine.
Invigorates blood and benefits Qi, stops abdominal pain and heart pain. Regulates menstruation and facilitates childbirth, primarily treats Xueyun (blood syncope) and Benglin (metrorrhagia and metrostaxis).
Moves Qi stagnation in blood and blood stagnation in Qi, manages various pains throughout the body, treats hernia and relaxes sinews, making it an excellent herb for breaking blood stasis and benefiting Qi.
Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizoma) moves but does not stay; it is suitable only for those with stasis. If menstruation occurs early due to deficiency with metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, or if there is postpartum Blood deficiency leading to syncope, it must not be taken.
Sweet and pungent in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Spleen (Pi) and Liver (Gan) meridians. Stir-fried with wine.
Breaks Qi and moves blood, eliminates accumulation and stops pain. For women with nodular masses (Jieju), for men with Bentun (rushing gas syndrome).
When Qi is not harmonious, Zang-Fu organs are stagnant, Yin and Yang are disordered, and pathogenic factors rely on this state; this herb can benefit Qi and reach the orifices, leaving no room for pathogens.
Peng'ezhu (Zedoary Rhizoma) is indeed a herb for grinding down accumulations. However, if deficient individuals take it, the accumulation may not be removed while the True Qi (Zhengqi) is exhausted, which is a serious concern. It should be used together with herbs that strengthen the Spleen and tonify Yuan Qi, so as to cause no harm.
