[Flavor and Nature]
Sweet, slightly cold, non-toxic. Enters the Shaoyin (Lesser Yin) and Taiyang (Greater Yang) meridians.
[Indications]
Nourishes the Heart and Liver. Its functions include relieving irritability and quenching thirst, arresting sweating, promoting urination, and stopping bleeding. Fresh wheat is hot in nature; aged wheat is mild and balanced. Those floating on water mainly treat spontaneous sweating due to deficiency.
Wheat bran is cool yet hot in effect. For any body pain or sores and ulcers that are swollen, rotten, and oozing, or for infants suffering from smallpox or chickenpox lesions that are ulcerated during summer heat, making them unable to lie on mats, it is beneficial to sew the bran into a padded mattress and sleep upon it.
[Flavor and Nature]
Pungent, sweet, very warm, highly toxic. Enters the Yangming (Yang Brightness) meridian and can guide medicinal properties upward.
[Indications]
Loss of voice due to wind-stroke, all kinds of cold wind-pathogens, facial spots and blemishes. Infantile toxic summer-heat invading the Heart, phlegm obstructing the heart orifices, coma, and convulsions. Without causing a "Mingxuan" reaction (a severe initial reaction indicating the expulsion of pathogenic factors), these conditions cannot be overcome. In the Sansheng Wan (Three-Life Pill), Bai Fuzi (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Rhizoma) serves as the sovereign herb; this refers to such cases.
(When harvested, wash away blood impurities in flowing long streams. Steam until cooked, pound, and use in decoctions for best results. The fascia represents the original Qi formed initially and should not be removed.)
[Flavor and Nature]
Sweet, salty, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Emaciation due to Qi and Blood deficiency, all kinds of deficiency exhaustion in men and women, epilepsy with loss of spirit and mental confusion. Calms the mind, nourishes Blood, tonifies Qi, and supplements Essence.
[Flavor and Nature]
Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Belongs to Earth but contains Fire. Sweet flavor enters the Spleen first. It is a herb acting on the Blood aspect of the Spleen meridian. Zhang Zhongjing used Dazao Tang (Jujube Decoction) to treat Ben Tun (Rushing Pig disease), nourishing Spleen Earth to pacify Kidney Qi. For water-fluid retention causing hypochondriac pain, Shizao Tang (Ten Jujubes Decoction) is used to benefit Earth to overcome Water. Fang Yaowu uses Ginger and Jujube as guiding herbs; warmth tonifies insufficiency, and sweetness moderates Yin-Blood. Patients with dental diseases or gan syndrome (pediatric malnutrition/dental caries) should not eat jujubes; children especially should avoid them, as it causes yellow teeth and worm-like erosion. Eating jujubes with green onions causes disharmony of the Five Zang organs. Eating jujubes with fish causes waist and abdominal pain.
(When used, saw off the four edges, grind clean on stone, stir-fry over charcoal fire, brush with vinegar and su (animal fat), or process with wine.)
[Flavor and Nature]
Sweet, neutral, toxic.
[Indications]
Blood stasis leading to numbness and paralysis, chronic cough, deficiency-type malaria. Belongs to Metal and Water. Its strength lies in nourishing Yin. It treats blood disorders and consumptive diseases. Generally, turtles and deer are spiritual creatures with longevity. The turtle head is often retracted towards the abdomen, capable of connecting the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel); thus, its plastron is taken to tonify the Heart, Kidney, and Blood to nourish Yin. The deer nose often points backward toward the tail, capable of connecting the Du Mai (Governing Vessel); thus, its horn is taken to tonify Mingmen (Gate of Life), supplement Essence, and boost Qi to nourish Yang. The ancients' creation of Guilu Erxian Gao (Turtle and Deer Two Immortals Paste) demonstrated miraculous skill. The ventral shell of the turtle treats leukorrhea (red and white discharge), breaks up masses and accumulations, removes blood stasis, stops bloody dysentery, reconnects tendons and bones, treats fatigue and exhaustion, weakness of the four limbs, and soreness and pain of the waist and legs.
