[Flavor and Properties]
Sweet, slightly cold, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Calms the Heart Spirit and stabilizes the Po. Opens the spirit. Mainly treats Shizhu (chronic wasting disease) and convulsions. Resolves Xian (convulsions), Tai Du (fetal toxins), and Dou Du (smallpox toxins). Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) is born in the hot southern direction, inheriting the Qi of Li Fire. Its substance is Yang while its nature is Yin, hence it appears cinnabar red externally and contains true Mercury internally. Its Qi is not hot but cold, because Li contains Yin. Its taste is not bitter but sweet, because Fire contains Earth. Thus, it can nourish the Heart, brighten the eyes, calm the fetus, detoxify, and induce sweating. It achieves merit according to the accompanying herbs, being effective everywhere. If a person feels their body suddenly splitting into two, walking and lying together unable to distinguish true from false, this is Hun leaving and Po scattering. Using Chen Sha (Cinnabar) as the sovereign herb, with Renshen (Ginseng Root) and Fuling (Poria) as ministers, decocted thickly and drunk daily, the true Qi will refresh and the false manifestations will dissolve. Or if one has many nightmares at night and cannot sleep all night, wearing an arrowhead-shaped piece of Chen Sha calms the Shen and Hun. These are all verifications of dispelling evil and calming the soul. It should only be used raw; if calcined and taken, it may penetrate the meridians and bone marrow, flowing to become carbuncles, tumors, or bone abscesses. Furthermore, for newborn infants, substances like Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), Qingfen (White Lead Powder), Bai Mi (Honey), and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) are sometimes used to purge fetal toxins. However, Qingfen purges phlegm but damages the Heart, and Zhu Sha purges saliva but damages the Spirit. If given to children with excess conditions, they become weak; if given to children with deficiency conditions, they easily suffer injury and develop various diseases.
