[Shengjiang] (Fresh Ginger)
Pungent and warm. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Its function is specifically to disperse pathogens and harmonize the middle jiao (stomach and spleen). When combined with Dazao (Jujube), it harmonizes Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) Qi. When combined with Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata), it warms the meridians and disperses cold. When combined with Xingren (Apricot Seed), it directs downward rebellious Qi in the chest and diaphragm. Treated with dew water, it treats summerheat malaria. It can neutralize the toxicity of Banxia (Pinellia Rhizoma), Tianxing (Arisaema Rhizoma), mushrooms, and wild birds. It repels mist, mountain miasma, and pestilential qi. The leaves, crushed for juice and drunk, eliminate food stagnation forming masses.
[Ganjiang] (Dried Ginger) - *Inferred from context*
Pungent, warm, and moistening. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Its function is specifically to treat yige (dysphagia) and fanwei (regurgitation). Combined with Tongbian (Child's Urine), it treats sudden syncope caused by phlegm obstruction. Boiled with Huangmingjiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) into a paste, applied externally, it treats wind-damp bi-syndrome pain.
[Baizhi] (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) - *Inferred from context*
Pungent and cool. Enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Its function is specifically to harmonize the spleen and promote water metabolism. It treats edema, swelling, and fullness. Combined with tea, it treats dysentery. For heat dysentery, retain the peel; for cold dysentery, remove the peel, which is excellent.
[Shengjiang] (Fresh Ginger) - *Inferred from context ("Combined with Dazao")*
Pungent. Enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian, Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Its function is specifically to harmonize Ying and Wei Qi. It is neither dispersing nor drying. When used together with Dazao (Jujube), it promotes the circulation of fluids in the spleen and stomach.
[Ganjiang] (Dried Ginger/Old Ginger) - *Inferred from context ("Mother Ginger")*
Pungent and hot. Enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Its function is specifically to drive out cold pathogens, release the exterior, and warm the meridians. It dries spleen dampness, settles vomiting, and eliminates phlegm. Used with Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), it benefits lung Qi and treats cold cough. It opens the five zang and six fu organs, unblocks the joints of the four limbs, and circulates the collateral vessels. It treats cold bi-syndrome, cold pi-mass, regurgitation, dysentery with abdominal pain, zhijia (masses), and abdominal distension. It opens the appetite, supports the spleen, eliminates food stagnation, and removes sluggishness. Dried Mother Ginger (Old Ginger) that is white, clean, and solid is superior.
[Yimucao] (Leonuri Herba) or [Paogjiang] (Charred Ginger) - *Inferred from context ("Shenghua Tang", "Postpartum")*
Pungent, bitter, and very hot. Enters the Hand and Foot Taiyin and Yangming Meridians. Its function is specifically to eliminate evil and generate new tissue, promoting the growth of Yin through Yang. When combined with Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gancao (Licorice Root), and Honghua (Carthamus Flower), it forms Shenghua Tang (Life-Generating Decoction). It is an essential herb for removing blood stasis postpartum. However, its nature is prone to flaming upward. When used to treat conditions in the middle jiao, it should be assisted by Dazao (Jujube). Long-term use damages Yin and harms the eyes. Pregnant women are especially contraindicated.
[Hushi] (Coriandrum Sativum)
Pungent, warm, and slightly toxic. Enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Its function is specifically to digest grains, relieve headache, regulate Qi in the lower abdomen and heart orifices, and benefit the large and small intestines. Its aromatic penetrating quality repels all kinds of pathogenic qi. For measles or smallpox that fail to erupt, decoct in wine and spray (avoid spraying the head and face). Cover the patient to keep warm, and the eruption will follow. Apply the juice to erysipelas. Decoct and wash to remove black spots on the face. Long-term consumption damages Shen (Spirit) and causes forgetfulness. Patients eating it may experience weak legs. Also known as Sui.
