[Scallion White / Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus]
Taste: Bitter, Acrid; Nature: Warm.
Meridian Tropism: Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian.
Actions: Specializes in dispersing; possesses slippery and unblocking properties to dissipate nodules.
Indications: Combined with Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou) and Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), it treats chest bi syndrome (Thoracic Obstruction) with stabbing pain. In cases of sudden death due to evil qi invasion, crush the fresh bulb to extract juice and instill into the nose. For Ben Tun Qi pain (Rushing Pig Qi pain), drinking the extracted juice is highly effective.
Contraindications: Avoid beef.
[Raphani Sativi Radix / Daikon Radish]
Taste: Acrid; Nature: Warm.
Meridian Tropism: Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian, Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian.
Actions: Specializes in opening the stomach and strengthening the spleen, unblocking the five zang organs, and reaching all orifices. Crushed and mixed with sesame oil for topical application, it reduces carbuncles and swellings; breaks up mass accumulations (Zheng Ji). Crushed and mixed with earth slurry for warm oral administration, it treats coma due to heatstroke. Applied topically to the soles of the feet, it treats epistaxis (nosebleed). Inserted into the anus, it treats Guan Ge syndrome (obstruction of upper and lower orifices). Applied to the umbilicus, it promotes diuresis and regulates bowel and urinary movements. Sliced and moxibusted, it treats various external sores, pathogenic obstruction, swelling, and toxicity. Combined with Minium (Huangdan), it treats malaria.
Cautions: Its nature is hot and its odor is strong; it generates phlegm, stirs fire, scatters qi, depletes blood, blurs vision, damages spirit, and harms vitality. Those with heat syndromes must not consume it. Avoid honey.
[Brassicae Napus Seed / Rapeseed]
Taste: Acrid; Nature: Warm.
Meridian Tropism: Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
Actions: Specializes in dispelling blood stasis and reducing swelling. Topical application of crushed seeds is highly effective for migratory wind carbuncle swelling, mastitis, and difficult labor. Excessive consumption may trigger diseases and induce sores. The seed treats "blood stabbing" in women (severe lower abdominal pain due to blood stasis); lightly stir-fried with one qian of Cinnamon Twig (Guixin), it is beneficial. Mixed with half a liang of Ginger and ground into powder, formed into pills the size of wu zi (wu berry) using vinegar paste, taken orally with five pills per dose using light vinegar soup, it is highly effective. The oil kills parasites. Also known as You Cai (Rapeseed).
[Brassicae Chinensis Seed / Mustard Seed]
Taste: Acrid; Nature: Warm.
Meridian Tropism: Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
Actions: Specializes in unblocking meridians, inducing sweating to disperse cold, warming the middle jiao to open the stomach, regulating qi, and resolving phlegm. Ground into powder and taken with wine (one qian), it treats regurgitation and rebellious qi. Mixed in equal parts with Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi) and applied with ginger juice, it is highly effective for Hong Kong foot (podagra/gouty arthritis) swelling and pain. Contraindicated in patients with sores, hemorrhoids, or hematochezia. The therapeutic effects of Chinese Mustard Seed are similar.
[White Mustard Seed / Baijiezi]
Taste: Acrid; Nature: Warm, Neutral.
Meridian Tropism: Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian.
Actions: Specializes in promoting qi movement. Raw use induces vomiting of wind-phlegm, disperses wind-cold, and erupts sores/rashes. Cooked use stabilizes cough and wheezing with phlegm, regulates tenesmus after dysentery, stops internal pain, aids digestion, and removes distension. Contraindicated in deficient individuals. Combined with fresh ginger juice and a small amount of Moschus (Shexiang) instilled into the nose, it treats chronic cephalalgia (head wind).
[Raphani Sativi Semen / Radish Seed]
Taste: Acrid, Sweet; Nature: Neutral.
Actions: Raw consumption raises qi; cooked consumption lowers qi.
Meridian Tropism: Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian.
Actions: Specializes in widening the middle jiao, aiding digestion, transforming phlegm, and dissipating blood stasis. Treats vomiting, epistaxis, cough, acid regurgitation. Promotes urination and defecation. Resolves alcohol toxicity, neutralizes wheat/gluten toxicity, and resolves tofu accumulation. Crushed raw and applied topically, it treats traumatic injuries and burns/scalds. Treats Jin Kou Li (closed-mouth dysentery) and elderly phlegm-wheezing; best consumed plain after stewing in a clay pot.
Interactions: Counteracts Polygoni Multiflori Preparata (He Shou Wu) and Rehmanniae Radix (Di Huang). Avoid Ginger, as ginger neutralizes its toxicity. Excessive consumption depletes qi and leaks blood; consuming with Sheng Di Huang causes white hair.
