This is also known as Gualualgen (Trichosanthis Radix). Those dug in autumn contain starch, while those dug in summer have only fibers without starch and are unsuitable for use.

This is Wanggua (Trichosanthes cucumeroides). The *Yueling* states: "In the fourth month, Wanggua grows." This refers to this plant.
Bitter, slightly cold, non-toxic. Enters the Jueyin Liver meridian. Unblocks collateral stasis and breaks up masses, promotes urination and defecation, and reduces abscesses and swellings.
Grows in flat fields and marshes in Lu, as well as between walls of residences. Roots are harvested in March. Seedlings emerge in March; the vines have many tendrils and can be eaten when tender. Leaves are round like horse hooves with pointed tips, green on the front side, pale on the back, and not glossy. In June and July, clusters of small five-petaled yellow flowers bloom. Fruits form, turning red or yellow when ripe. Roots resemble smaller versions of Gualualgen (Trichosanthis Radix); the clarified powder is very white. One must dig two to three chi deep to obtain the main root.
