Soak in rice water. Wu Shan (Belamcanda chinensis).
Bitter in taste, slightly cold in nature, with slight toxicity. Treats cough with rebellious qi and resolves bi-syndrome pain in the throat. Dispels blood stasis and unblocks meridians, breaks up accumulations and eliminates phlegm. Applied externally to carbuncles and swellings to resolve malaria nodules (Malaria Mother), descends excess fire and promotes bowel movement.
Grows everywhere. Cultivated by households. The varieties currently cultivated are mostly purple-flowered, called Purple Butterfly. The leaves resemble those of Iris tectorum, hence also named Wu Shan.
Stems emerge from among the leaves, branching and flowering on the stems. Fruits form capsules in autumn and winter, containing black seeds. Roots are harvested in March.

Sweet in taste, cold in nature, with slight toxicity.
Grows everywhere; cultivated as ornamental plants. Seedlings emerge in clusters in February, with soft stems resembling Chinese cabbage. Leaves are palm-sized, round with pointed tips, and venation resembles that of Plantaginis Semen (Cheqiancao). Stems emerge in June and July, bearing fine leaves and flowers on the stems. Flowers are white, smaller at the base and larger at the tip, with yellow stamens emerging from the center; they are fragrant but do not produce seeds.
