The seeds are used after stir-frying. "Jia" refers to Peach Blossom (Note: Contextually, this likely refers to Impatiens balsamina seed, but the text explicitly states "Jia points to Peach Blossom").
Bitter in taste, neutral in nature, slightly toxic. It penetrates bones and softens hardness, damages teeth and opens orifices, induces labor and aborts fetuses, attacks accumulations and relieves dysphagia. The root and sprouts have similar therapeutic indications. Applied topically for swelling and pain caused by contusions and bruises.
When a tooth is about to fall out, grind the drug into powder, add a small amount of arsenic trioxide, apply it to the painful root to extract the tooth. (Verified Formula 1.)
For severe bone impaction in the throat causing suffocation, grind the drug with water, instill it using a bamboo tube; the bone will soften immediately. Avoid contact with the teeth. Also, insufflate the powder into the throat. (Formula 2.)
For dysphagia where food cannot pass down, soak in wine for three nights, grind into powder, form pills the size of mung beans, take eight pills each time with wine. (Formula 3.)
To induce labor, grind the drug into powder, take two qian with water, avoiding contact with the teeth. Additionally, apply castor bean seeds to the soles of the feet. (Formula 4.)
For pediatric abdominal masses and accumulations, use Balsam Seed (Fengxianzi), Red Flower Seeds (Shuihonghua), Rhubarb (Dahuang), and Mirabilite (Mangxiao) ground into fine powder. Take one white pigeon, remove feathers and entrails, open the abdomen without touching water, wipe clean with cloth, insert the powder inside, tie tightly with cotton thread, boil in a clay pot until dry, then roast the pigeon until yellow. Eat in the morning; by evening the disease softens, and recovery occurs through bloody stool after three days. (Formula 5.)
For swelling and pain from contusions, crush the roots and leaves and apply externally. (Formula 6.)
For bone impaction in the throat, crush the root, hold in the mouth and swallow, then rinse with water. (Formula 7.)
For accidental ingestion of copper or iron objects. Same method as above. (Formula 8.)
To soften the feet for washing, use five qian each of Glauber's Salt (Pixiao), Balsam Seed (Fengxianzi), and Pomegranate Peel (Shiliupi), and four qian of Artemisia capillaris (Yinchen). Decoct and wash. Do not wash with hands, as women may experience wrapping/deformation of the limbs.
Another method: Crush Balsam Flowers with roots and decoct for washing, which is also effective. (Formula 9.)
Kudzu Root (Yuanhua) is used after vinegar stir-frying. Cassia Seed (Jueming) acts as an assistant herb; it is incompatible with Licorice (Gancao).
Acrid and bitter in taste, toxic. Enters the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. Drains water and breaks qi stagnation, expels fluid retention and clears phlegm. Treats cough and eliminates rebellious qi, soothes carbuncles and reduces abdominal fullness.
Rauvolfia verticillata (Raohua) has the same therapeutic effects.
Kudzu Root grows in valleys of Huaiyuan. Flowers are harvested in spring, roots in autumn. It is now found everywhere. Perennial roots and old stems are purple; roots are white resembling elm roots. Leaves resemble willow leaves.
Purple flowers bloom in spikes in February, finer than vine flowers. Those from Jiangzhou are yellow, called Yellow Kudzu Root. Some say yellow ones are Rauvolfia; others say they are yellow when fresh but turn white when dried.
Method for cauterizing skin tags: Boil Licorice into paste, paint around the base of the tag with a brush several times. Then mix Kudzu Root, Great Euphorbia (Daji), and Kansui (Gansui) into powder, blend with vinegar. Paint the center separately, avoiding contact with Licorice. The next day, the tag shrinks. Apply Licorice paste to the smaller area three times as before, then reapply the medicinal powder. It will naturally become necrotic and shrink. (Verified Formula 1.)
For early-stage bubo, crush the root, extract juice, decoct and drink, apply dregs externally. Resolution occurs if toxins are discharged. (Formula 2.)
For early-stage scrofula in robust individuals, grind Kudzu Root with water and ingest. Severe vomiting and diarrhea indicate resolution. (Formula 3.)
For intense localized pain between the back and legs, apply root powder mixed with vinegar, bind with cloth. (Formula 4.)
For "ghost fetus" and mass disorders with amenorrhea, stir-fry roots into powder, take with Peach Kernel Decoction. Continue until foul matter is expelled. (Formula 5.)
For jaundice due to alcohol consumption with yellow urine, burn Pepper Seeds (Jiaomu) into powder, take half a qian with water. (Formula 6.)
