Tonifies the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner) and calms the Five Zang Organs, benefits the Spleen and Stomach, moistens the Lungs and Heart, fills the Essence and Marrow, assists the sinews and bones, dispels Wind-Dampness, and drives down the three types of intestinal parasites.
Available in both North and South China; those from Maoshan and Songshan are considered superior. The seedling grows one to two chi high. Leaves resemble bamboo leaves but are shorter, growing in opposite pairs. The stem is soft and brittle, somewhat resembling peach branches; the base is yellow and the tip reddish. In April, it blooms with pale green-white flowers, resembling soybean flowers. It bears white seeds like millet grains, though some varieties do not produce seeds. The root resembles tender ginger and is yellow.
Harvest the roots in the second and eighth lunar months. Roots can also be split and planted sparsely; after one year, they grow very dense. Seeds can also be used for propagation. Due to the prevalence of counterfeits, it is rarely used in recent times.
Soak in hot water for several days, then process with Ginger Juice. Shegan (Belamcanda Rhizome) acts as an assistant herb. It opposes Gaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit), fears Xionghuang (Realgar), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Qinpi (Ailanthus Bark), and Guijia (Tortoise Shell); it is incompatible with Wutou (Aconite Root). Avoid consuming Yangxue (Sheep Blood), Haizao (Sargassum), and Yitang (Maltose). Aged material is preferred.
Pungent, warm, toxic. Enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, as well as the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian, Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, and Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Descends rebellious Qi to stop vomiting, expels Phlegm and Dampness. Resolves cold and heat symptoms of Shanghan (Cold Damage), dissipates fullness and stagnation in the chest and heart. Treats cough with reverse-flowing Qi and dizziness, as well as carbuncles and sore throat. Contraindicated during pregnancy.
Found everywhere; those from Qizhou (modern Jinan, Shandong) are superior. In February, a single stem emerges with three leaves at the tip, light green, resembling bamboo leaves. Those grown in Jiangnan have leaves resembling Peony leaves. The roots overlap, larger at the top and smaller at the bottom, with yellow skin and white flesh. Harvest roots in August.
