Main indications. Promote urination, relieve summerheat, clear heat, regulate menstruation, and calm the fetus. However, the pulp is difficult to digest and should not be swallowed whole. Watermelon seeds and shells, decocted with Diyu (Sanguisorbae Radix), Baiwei (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Puhuang (Typhae Pollen), and Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex) in water, treat hematemesis and intestinal bleeding (hematochezia), regardless of whether the condition is recent or chronic; three doses are guaranteed to be effective. Watermelon frost: Preparation method. Take one large earthenware jar made of da-huang clay and one watermelon. Cut off the top lid loosely and place it inside the jar. Fill the watermelon completely with p-xiao (Mirabilite). Replace the lid, secure it with bamboo skewers, and cover it with another yellow clay jar. Seal the exterior tightly with bark strips and mud. Place in a shady location for several days until white frost forms on the outside of the jar. Sweep off the frost using a goose feather. Repeat this process as new frost forms until no more frost appears. Store the frost in a porcelain bottle. When needed, take a small amount and insufflate it into the throat to treat tou-ee (tonsillitis) and hou-bi (pharyngolaryngeal obstruction).

Main indications. Expel wind-heat phlegm and saliva, eliminate retained food in the upper jiao, treat jaundice, edema, epilepsy, cough with counterflow qi, hyperactive qi, epigastric fullness and hardness. Genti San (Melon Stalk Powder): Genti (roasted until yellow) and Chi Xiaodou (Adzuki Bean) each 2.5 qian. Grind into powder. Take 1 qian per dose. Decoct Xiangchi (Prepared Soybean) 1 he and hot water 7 he, strain, and take in one dose. Treats floating pulse at cun position, chest fullness, and retained food in the epigastrium; recovery occurs after inducing vigorous vomiting. Note: This is the principal formula for emetics. Whenever this medicine is used, its purpose is to induce vomiting.

Main indications. Dispel summerheat, dissipate heat, raise yang, break blood stasis, quench thirst, remove blood stasis while preserving healthy blood. Treats hematemesis, expectoration of blood, epistaxis, hematuria, bloody strangury, bloody dysentery, lower gastrointestinal bleeding, spermatorrhea, edema, metrorrhagia in women, restless fetal movement, postpartum lochia retention, retained placenta, carbuncles and swellings, erysipelas, itching caused by lacquer allergy. Seeds: Tonify the middle, nourish the spirit, thicken the stomach and intestines, improve vision and hearing, dispel heat, quench thirst, astringe essence and stop dysentery, pacify fire pathogens of the upper and lower ministerial and sovereign fires. Treats metrorrhagia and leukorrhea in women, and all blood diseases. Lotus root main indications: Cool blood, disperse stasis, treat dryness and thirst after illness, deficiency-thirst after cholera, and postpartum blood disorders in women. Helu Ye San (Lotus Leaf Powder): Dried lotus leaf 2 liang, Guijianyu (Cacumen Corni), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Liuji Nu (Herba Siegesbeckiae), and Puhuang (Typhae Pollen) each 1 liang. Grind into powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Decoct with Tongbian (child's urine) 1 large cup, Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 2 slices, and Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) 1 fen (crushed), and take orally. Treats postpartum lochia retention, abdominal pain, and restlessness. Shilian San (Stone Lotus Powder): Shilian (Nelumbinis Semen, removed from heart and shell) 1.5 liang, Baifuling (Poria), and Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) 5 qian. Grind into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with rice water. Treats postpartum cough with counterflow qi, vomiting, palpitations, and dizziness. Lianmi San (Lotus Seed Powder): Lianrou (Lotus Seed Meat) 3 liang, Huanglaomi (Fried Yellow Rice) 3 he, Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, fried), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, earth-fried) each 5 qian, Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) 1.5 qian, white sugar 1 liang, Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, baked until cooked) 2 qian. Grind into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with hot water on an empty stomach. Treats early morning diarrhea in the elderly. Lianshi Wan (Lotus Seed Pill): Lianshi (Lotus Seed), Bajiji (Morindae Officinalis Radix), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed), Buguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus, fried), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Fupenzi (Rubiae Fructus) each 1 liang, Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Scapulae, ground) 5 qian. Grind into powder, make pills with rice paste, size of wu zi (sesame seed). Take 20-30 pills per dose, taken with salt water on an empty stomach. Treats deficiency-cold of the lower yuan and white turbid discharge in urine. Shuanghe San (Double Lotus Powder): Ou jie (Lotus Node) and He di (Lotus Peduncle) each 7 pieces. Mash with a little honey, decoct in water, and take orally. Treats sudden and severe hematemesis. Jin suo yu guan wan (Golden Lock Jade Gate Pill): Ou jie (Lotus Node), Lian xu (Lotus Stamens), Lian zi (Lotus Seed), Qian shi (Euryales Semen), Shan yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Baifuling (Poria), Baifushen (Poria with Hostwood) each 2 liang. Grind into powder. Jin ying zi (Chrysanthemi Fructus) 1 jin, crushed. Decoct in 1 dou of water until reduced to 8/10, strain, and boil again into a paste. Mix with a little flour to make pills, size of wu zi (sesperme seed). Take 70 pills per dose. Treats seminal emission due to heart deficiency and restlessness.
