Sifang Ruyi Cao (Four-Directional Ruyi Grass)
Also known as Jiantou Cao (Arrow Grass), Jiandao Cao (Scissors Grass), and Dafeng Cao (Great Wind Grass). *Baicao Jing* records: It grows in mountains or on field ridges, coming in purple and white varieties. The one with purple flowers is named Jin Jiandao (Golden Scissors), and the one with white flowers is named Yin Jiandao (Silver Scissors); for medicinal use, the white-flowered variety is superior. Its leaves are no different from those potted at home, except that the flowers are smaller, and the leaves are narrower, longer, and slightly pointed at the tip.
Zhao Xuemin notes: Ruyi Cao found in the wild has leaves that are pointed at the top and round at the bottom, with a deep cyan color, showing little difference from cultivated varieties, except that the leaf color is slightly darker green. Its flowers belong to the same category but a different species; its nature and efficacy are not significantly different.
Ge Zufang records: Treats pi kuai (abdominal masses), chuang du (sores and toxins), expels wind and regulates qi, dispels epidemic pathogens, and treats fei yong (lung abscess).
For early-stage ru yong (mastitis): *Baicao Jing* records: Use 1 liang of Yu Ruyi Cao (Jade Ruyi Grass), decocted in bai jiu (white wine). Take when the stomach is full. For early-stage cases, two doses will cause resolution; for cases where pus has formed, two prescriptions will lead to rupture; for already ruptured cases, three doses facilitate easy healing; it also relieves pain.
For ru yong and ding chuang (furuncle): *Jiusheng Kuhai* records: Baihua Ruyi Cao (White-flowered Ruyi Grass), also known as Yin Jiandao (Silver Scissors), grows in fields and mountains. Its leaves are narrower and flowers smaller than cultivated varieties. Crush and take the juice internally; apply the dregs externally to the affected area.
For blisters on a child's back: *Jiyan* records: White blisters appear on a child's back, accumulating like beads. They rupture within one to two days, discharging pus and blood, causing severe itching. As one area heals, another appears. Crush Ruyi Cao and apply as a poultice; bind firmly with a long cloth strip. Healing occurs overnight.
For sores on the feet: *Jiyan* records: To treat sores on the feet presenting with chaotic holes resembling a honeycomb, crush Ruyi Cao and apply as a poultice. Alternatively, grind dried Ruyi Cao into powder, mix with ji zi qing (egg white), and apply.
Note: This herb differs from Di Ding Cao (Viola Herba). Di Ding Cao is smaller, while this herb is larger; Di Ding Cao has dark green leaves, whereas this herb has light green leaves. Some claim that cultivated Ruyi Cao with white flowers is the true Yu Ruyi (Jade Ruyi). Wild varieties remain Yin Jiandao (Silver Scissors). Their medicinal quality is inferior to cultivated varieties.
For infant smallpox accompanied by急促 breathing (qi ji): Liu Shi Yan Fang (Liu’s Verified Formula) records: Baihua Di Ding (White-flowered Viola), regardless of quantity, decocted in water and taken orally, immediately stops急促 breathing.
Yan Tian Huo Dou (Summer Heat Fire Smallpox), Liu Shi Yan Fang: During summer months, smallpox may present as "fire smallpox," characterized by redness all over the body. Crush Baihua Di Ding (White-flowered Viola) to extract juice, and take mixed with bai jiu (white wine)...
